That is because they made fun of the fact that Toronto stands in as many cities for movies. Heck, the entire Lucas Lee part was the joke. I had to laugh cause the castle was used in how many movies I have seen. I think it was once the X-Men's base.

They do make fun of the fact that Toronto often stands in for New York but that's not the reason it's set in Toronto. It's because the guy who wrote the book/movie is from Toronto and accordingly based it there. All the locations in the book/movie are well known Toronto spots.

Cheaper than most cities it stands in for. Plus the local film support industry is quite strong and the studio space is getting bigger and more top-of-the-line year after year. Most shoots are done at night to avoid traffic issues (as well as better lighting options).
