I love people who go on these anti-font rants. I don't understand them, but they crack my shiat up. The truth is that most of these fonts have a use at some place and some time, whether it's Arial, Bembo, Trajan or even Comic Sans. Some of these don't have a place often, but it's still there. Sure the Cool Kids like to talk tough, but most of them don't know what they're talking about.

Hack Patooey: Font fanatics need to relax

The only problem I have with fancy font users is that most of the time they're pretty high on the attention whore scale.

Look at me! I'm using a fancy font in a different color in business correspondence. What I have to say in my email/document is more important than what you have to say!

I used to pay some attention, but with W7 and Office 2007 all my stuff is in Calibri or Consolas by default and those are both pleasant enough. The OCD geek in my always gravitates to monospaced fonts for work though (except email, reports, etc)... I just love me some aligned columns.

I don't mind Arial for anything on screens where the serifs can make the letters look fuzzy, but on a printed page anything with serifs is much easier and quicker to read. Using any sans serif font slows down the reader, which may be your intent.

When people can't tell the difference between two different characters, you fail as a font.
Comic sans may be used inappropriately 9 times out of 10, but that's a problem with the user, not the font.

Broadly speaking, you only need two fonts. You want a "serif" font for printouts, and a "sans-serif" font for screen reading.

I recommend Papyrus and Comic Sans, respectively.

back when computer monitors were extremely crappy, it was thought that sans serif fonts were easier on the eyes when seen on a monitor, while serif fonts were easier on print.

nowadays, i think our monitors are good enough that this is not so important

2013-01-25 10:32:21 AM
Isn't some of the question "what are you using the font for?"

I don't just mean "screen vs. print", as a few folks have mentioned and debated.

And I don't mean "serif vs. non-serif". I think the style guides tell you sans serif for headings, serif for blocks of text.

I mean, isn't there a different font that you would use for, e.g., a long legal document (that you want the reader to be able to read and understand) vs. a "text light" document (e.g., a website of photography).

What do you guys think?
