czei: When did High School kids start being nice to each other? They sure weren't when I was in High School ( 1980's ). I was surrounded by more than a few sociopaths, IMHO./ one of the worst ones is now a CEO...// maybe this newer generation is better than mine; time will tell, I guess...
foo monkey: He's black and good at tennis?
kd8our: The genetic test simply looks for the lack of the ELN gene.
Random Anonymous Blackmail: gadianSounds patronizing.I guess I am not the only cynical bastard in here. It is hard to tell if they do this in a mocking manner or they are doing it under good intentions. Kids are arseholes.
fickenchucker: Thunderpipes: fickenchucker: This story gives me hope for the future. My kids are in high school and they seem to have none-to-very-little of the clique warfare I remember. No-one bugs each other for no reason. By and large it seems the jocks and beautiful people have grown some empathy since the '80s, which is pretty cool. The kid who won obviously has many friends who like him and look out for him, and the people who would have normally won know they have a brighter future ahead of them, so why get wrapped up in the silliness of high school?WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THIS WORLD? MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE GETTING ALONG!!?!?!/I'm getting old and a little confused...And when your kids get into the real world, they have no competitive spirit, no drive, and will be mediocre, get free stuff, and not contribute. This is reflected in the huge drop in kids' performance over the years in every category but texting speed and manners.Your kids are taught to conform, that being bad is okay, and it is wrong to be better than anyone else. Good lessons, those. Then you don't know me at all. I view my job as a dad to teach them the world is out to get them and they had better get good grades in order to keep their options open. On one hand they're taught to be nice to the kids who are weirder than they are, and on the other I encourage them to be suspect of everyone and everything out in the real world. They both have good grades, are almost Eagle Scouts, play on the high school baseball team, and realize they have to pay their own freight when they become adults. What you term conforming is what I term learning the system and playing it to their advantage. They're not happy being bad, as you say, and realize participation trophies are society's way of dumbing down our children. When their Little League team won first place a few years back they were extremely happy. The next year when the team didn't do so well they understood there's no glory for fourth place. But ...
Thunderpipes: Too bad your kids will be selling french fries and wondering why they aren't race car drivers or CEOs. Aggressive people do well in life, period. The rest sit on the side lines, complain, and vote for Obama.
AngryJailhouseFistfark: What about the Homecoming Queen? Think about it, this is Tennessee. What's she going to do next, waitress at a hooters? Maybe she's got the grades to go to some "college" in Tennessee, but then what, waitress at a hooters? This is her golden moment, her shining glorious apex, Queen of the Prom. When does that happen again? Never. Maybe she hooks up with the highschool quarterback and he'll marry her and she'll get to wear that dress again when she walks down the aisle, but then it's babies and babies and more babies and then she's a clerk at the Walmart or substitute librarian at the elementary school. So this is it, folks. She's on the edge of 18 and who's her date? Who's going to be standing beside her in the photo that'll be blown up to 8x10 and framed over her parent's mantle -- 'cause you can bet your ass that Ma and Pa don't have much left in them after all that waitressing and babies and working the register at the PigglyWiggly and toiling away in the coal mine, shiat, can he even draw a breath anymore? So there they are, the very best thing either of 'em ever did was to make this beautiful young woman who's only got a few more years before the pounds pack on and the teeth start coming out. And there she is, pristine and lovely, radiant and splendid, all of her best assets enhanced cosmetically by the skills of her aunt Loreene who works at the beauty parlor and got permission to take home the "good" kit to do the girl's makeup. But no, not Lance or Kieth or Jimmy, all strapping young lads, each in his own way demonstrating all of his own best traits as he peaks at 18. Shoulders and backs brawny and powerful from football and working in the lumber yard and tearing down and rebuilding that old truck, The stubble of manhood emerging on their cheeks while the fresh glow of youth still sparkles in their eyes. But not this night. Tonight they're all sidelined while the good-natured but congenitally damaged kid squires the lovely young Prom Queen. That's her prese ...
