Polish Hussar: basscomm: 30 years? We had one here for over 40 years that was eventually released into a sanctuary, which, by all accounts, was the best thing that could have happened to her. So, yeah, this needs to happen.

Geez, it got dusty in here all of a sudden.

The Detroit Zoo, my local zoo, sent their elephants to a sanctuary in 2004 (the linked Det. Free Press article says this was the first time this had been done on just ethical grounds).  They felt the one acre enclosure wasn't big enough and the Michigan winters were too hard on them.

I can't believe I'm saying this but, we should all be more like Detroit.

pxsteel: This is a case of PETA, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. Do you have any idea of the amount of joy this elephant has brought to the children of the Philippines over the past 33 years?

Who the fark cares?

Hi, military brat here. My family was stationed in the Philippines 31 years ago. Mila was the first elephant my baby sister (she was 7) ever saw.

Who the fark cares?

Hey PETA, how about you spend your money wisely. Improve the elephant habitat and import a few freinds instead of stripping the country of it's only elephant.

Who the fark cares?

You're a horrible person. I hope you and your baby sister get cancer.

Not a good idea.
The other elephants will ostracize and reject this strange, solitary creature. Probably kill him.

Do elephants have "toenails"? I know elephants don't have toes, but it really looks like some nails.

If PETA were the slightest bit effective, this poor animal wouldn't have been kept like that for 3 decades!!!

Except that, knowing PETA, they'll probably just decide the elephant is too expensive to help and euthanize it.
