Plausible, likely, No. if you don't change Gruden's Offense, Gruden beats you with a lesser team.

Timmey Mad!

you're exonerated of sabotage if you have rich gannon at qb. it's more subterfuge.

Quarterback Rich Gannon threw five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns.

But the coach sabotaged the game. Right.

Yeah, Tim Brown is just pissed off and way off base here. If there was any sabotage on the part of Callahan, it wasn't deliberate, but rather something of arrogance. Raiders loose to the Pats in the AFC Championship, Gruden gets fired. When Gruden gets hired by the Bucs, Callahan and company figure there's no need to change the playbooks because they were working very well and, sorry Bucs fans, the only way the Raiders would ever be playing the Bucs would be a meaningless cross-conference game or the inconceivable event that the Bucs actually made it to the Super Bowl.

So, the Bucs actually make it. Callahan and company go into panic mode and try to create a new offense and defense and drill it into the players in 2 weeks; virtually impossible for any team.

Here I would've thought it was Gannon's 83.3.

Callahan farked up, but not intentionally.

Not changing the audibles, switching the game plan at the last minute from a power running game to pass happy (playing right into the bucs strength), and having your starting center go missing in Tijuana right before the game were the reasons they lost.

I guess Tim Brown realized he's not getting into the hall and wants some attention. Dancing with the stars doesn't want him either?

This was my initial reaction, but these arent NORMAL players, these are two of the best receivers in the history of the game talking here. Guys who know what standard procedure is and know enough to know that THIS was very much not standard.

Im not saying Brown doesent sound like a nutjob, but it has to at least make you think.

WR stats are getting crazier and crazier with each season. Without rings it will be hard for guys like Brown and Cris Cater to get in. You have guys like Wes Welker to thank.

Except if you read the article that didn't happen

"A run-first approach would have run counter to Oakland's tendencies during the season; it had a 60-40 ratio of pass to run. The Raiders led the league in pass completions and passing yards and was second in attempts"

Who WOULDN'T sabotage his own team's chance for a Super Bowl title because...you're friends with the other coach? I can't make that make any sense at all. Lots of coaches are good friends...that doesn't mean they would give up a chance to be Super Bowl champions for it.

Indeed. Is Jim Harbaugh going to sabotage the Niners in this years' Super Bowl, just so his brother John can win one, or vice versa? Of course not, they will compete like always, brothers or no. The only time I might see friendship or family relations between opposing coaches might come into play is if Team A is stomping Team B into the dirt. If B has no chance of winning, the coach for A might take their starters out and lay off on the pounding, for the sake of their friend/family relationship with the other coach, but that's it.

Winning trumps Friendship or Family until the final whistle blows.

I'd lean closer to panic and a bad decision on Callahan's part. Some even theorized this is what pushed Barrett Robbins over the edge. Al had been beaten by better though.

I've actually heard a couple of different timelines on this account, including one that indicates that Barrett Robbins went off of the reservation first causing Callahan to make the 11th hour changes to the gameplan. So, I tend to agree with panic and bad judgement. Though I do wonder about not changing the audibles, that does seem negligently short-sighted.

Also, there was no bye week in between the conference championship games & Super Bowl that year for some weird reason, so the Bucs defense had enough time to learn the Raiders offense inside & out, but the Raiders couldn't reinvent themselves.

If you watch the America's Game on that Super Bowl one of the people featured is John Lynch. Lynch talked about how they knew the Raiders were going to run the Sluggo route (Slant and Go for you non football peeps) and they knew the formation when it would happen and they have audio from the game of Lynch yelling "SLUGGO! SLUGGO!" as the Raiders were lining up in the formation and it played right into the Bucs hand. First off, only two coaches a year go to the Super Bowl so the idea that ANY coach would throw a Super Bowl is ludicrous but even more ludicrous is how did Callahan tell Rich Gannon to throw all those interceptions?

2013-01-24 09:30:04 AM
I hate that Tim Brown is trying to shiat on the Bucs greatest achievement. You have the MVP of the year in Rich Gannon. And at the time two of the greatest wide receivers of all time. You're damn right you should have been passing the ball. The Bucs had the number 1 defense in the league that year. And even if the O line was bigger than Tampa's, that fast linebacking core and free safety in Jon Lynch was not going to let any big runs happen anyway.

I know that when I have the league MVP QB and Jerry Rice and Tim Brown as my WRs, I want to run the ball with Charlie Garner into Warren Sapp. Seems like a good plan.

/if he had gone power running, then Brown would've claimed it was sabotage for not trying to pass with that previous sentence

2013-01-24 09:33:05 AM
Fun Stat Time:

The '02 Bucs pass defense that year surrendered 2490 passing yards (427 yards less than the next best team), 10 TD's and 31 (!) INT's. That's better than even the vaunted '00 Ravens defense, which gave up 2997 yards passing (8th best in the league that year), 11 TD's and 19 INT's.

And it wasn't because teams were running all over the Bucs either. Tampa in '02 had the 6th best run defense, giving up 1554 yards and 8 TD's on the ground. The entire season, ground and passing, they only gave up 4044 yards, 1200 less than the league average.

Brown and Rice were shells of themselves that year, and especially in that game. If you catch a reply on NFL network or ESPN classic, you can tell that the two are covered the entire game, but no- it's the coach's fault.

If anything, what he did in Lincoln should be the entire basis for this claim to be dismissed.

Well I think just focusing on the rush would've been worked well. Bo Jackson would've torn that defense up. He still played for them in the year XXXVII right? (Sorry I don't speak Roman).

I can understand why some of the Raiders might have thought Callahan was trying to fark them over--Callahan is definitely Buddy Rich when he flies off the handle.

Shamelessly copied from my r/NFL posts on Tuesday:

Tim can't stand it, you know Al planned it
He's gonna set it straight, Callahan-gate
He can't stand Robbins, that's what we hear
'Cause the Tijuana booze is crystal clear

So we sat back and wonder why
Chuckie was such a thorn in their side
Gannon's season was a mirage
Tim's tellin' y'all, it's Sabotage

So, so, so, so listen up cause Rice can't say nothin'
Smith shut him down with the routes he was jumpin'
Another short-n-out and Dwight was gone
Jon told 'em how, they piled it on and on

Cause what Rice saw he might not catch
And we can bet, the Raiders were outmatched
You're bettin' on a form of espionage
He's trying to tell you now, it's sabotage

Jim: I politely disagree.

By the time they got to the SB that year, the team hated Callahan so badly that he wouldn't go in the locker room alone, and yes, it broke down along racial lines. I don't think he "sabotaged" the game, he was just doing as instructed by the NFL Head Office in Las Vegas.
