(The New York Times)   Paul Krugman, displaying the acumen that won him his Nobel, explains that if you pretend GDP is a lot higher than it really is, government spending isn't going up at all. No, really   (krugman.blogs.nytimes.com ) divider line

Why does this matter? First, if the economy is depressed - if GDP is low relative to potential - the share of spending in GDP will correspondingly look high. Suppose that you have commitments to defense, to Social Security, to Medicare that are growing at rates consistent with the long-run growth in the economy; if the economy plunges and then takes a long time to get back to trend, those spending programs will temporarily account for a larger share of GDP, even if there hasn't been any acceleration in their growth.

Wow subby, it's almost as if he's using basic math.

Suggestion, subby: avoid complicated subjects like this. You're just displaying how enormous a gulf exists between your intelligence and his.

Dumbass tag is for yourself, right subby?

Mentat: Wow subby, it's almost as if he's using basic math.

And using basic English to explain it!

This apparently confuses some people.

Is subby trying seriously to get me to believe that:

1) Paul Krugman, Nobel Laureate, Doesn't Know Math or Understand Relativity.
2) Subby is a world-class thinking who can out-think a Nobel Laureate economist?

Subby, please hand your keyboard over to the principal. You can get it back after your write 100 times on the chalkboard: "I will not count to potato while getting a hand job from Sean Hannity."

It's amazing how the words "Nobel Prize Winner" have become an insult and a sneer inside the rightwing echo chamber.

The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards bestowed in a number of categories in recognition of cultural and/or scientific advances.

Oh wait, I could see how the American right wing might be intrinsically and vehement opposed to them now.

Things subby sucks at:

1. Growth patterns
2. Regression to a statistical mean
3. Demand for unemployment insurance, food assistance, and housing subsidies vs the unemployment rate
4. Spending as non-fungible allocations of tax dollars

Seriously, biatching about government spending as a percentage of GDP during a period of recession must make perfect sense to people who really REALLY hate the blah President.

There's no other logic to it. Since the most basic tenets of macroeconomics tell us that the government MUST spend more to increase demand in a recession, and the modern welfare state invariably pays out more during a recession, the idea that government spending as a percentage of GDP shouldn't increase during a recession is laughable to anyone with an IQ in at least the double digits.

// But, hey, I'm sure subby has an economic plan that doesn't involve his last name and the suffix -ville being merged to describe all the tent cities he creates.

Fair point, though I don't see many of the people living in the new "subby-villes" hiring contractors to properly design and construct their lean-to's.
