Since I have my head up my ass, I have no idea what this hoax was. All the stories talk about the hoax but don't really tell us what it was. Was it that he told people that he had a girlfriend that was fictitious and people found out about it and then tried to cover himself by faking her death? I'm trying to find out what I am supposed to be angry at?

So, was a chick talking to Teo, or does the Tuasasopwilsasso have a deceptively good chick voice?

If this is what they are using to fill the slow sports news week before the Pro Bowl I can't wait to see what they use in between the Super Bowl and Spring Training.

It sounds to me like he got into that awkward position where you start telling bigger lies to cover up little lies and then watch the whole thing fall apart in front of you. I can relate, but lucky for me, no one cares who I am.

I was just talking with my father, George Clooney, about this whole Manti story. George said as long as no one got hurt then why should anyone care if the girlfriend was fake. We would have talked further about this , but I had to leave to meet my wife Gisele at our home, the Fortress of Solitude.

That's kind of the where my thoughts were going as well. My question would be why he started those lies to begin with. Is he gay and was he trying to create a beard to hide from homophobes? Basically, should I be mad at him or the homophobes?

i feel the same way, its like there started being headlines on fark talking about this supposed scandal that's worse than benghazi (trolling) and that its something that we are all supposed to know about, but no one has offered an "if you are just joining us" synopsis.

in the end, i dont think i care, im just frustrated that i am being expected to know something that hasnt been laid out.

long story short, its like a follow up tag to a story that never appeared on fark in the first place

Well, far too many people are going to be angry about the trees and not the forest. Yeah, Te'o lied about his girlfriend who died of cancer and made him so inspirational. But so what?

The anger should be at the fawning media who did nothing but play stenographer to Te'o's narrative, even when so many of them suddenly keep saying that they thought the were way too many parts to his story that didn't check out.

Suggested this to someone and got slammed with their angry outrage. Apparently being a moron or a liar is scads better than being possibly gay. And speculating semi-privately on the motives of figures blatantly trotted out to us in the media is strictly forbidden by family and/or moral law.

Holy farking shiat. I didn't know that part. I figured if someone was going to fake phone logs, they'd actually mock something up in Photoshop.

Right. Why type up the phone bill instead of just e-mailing a copy of it to reporters (and redact whatever numbers/calls you don't want them to see)?

I'm a Bama guy. He's not very good on defense. He could play for Rutgers or Vandy maybe. I'm sorry that his Grandmother passed away.

If he met with and regularly talked with a girl on the phone for hours, never had sex, but that was because they were Mormons, in a years-long relationship, wouldn't that make the girl Te'o's girlfriend who lied about her name and faked her death, rather than Te'o's non-existent girlfriend?

/something ain't right about this story

What better way to get your name in front of everybody just before the NFL combine than to get an imaginary story tweeted about you. It's almost as good as Brain Boswell's "No Bozo" t-shirts. He's a marketing major, folks!

Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend is only an interesting news story because it illustrates the huge pitfalls in 'access' journalism.
No-one cares that he lied. No-one cares whether he was deceived or not. No-one cares who might have done it or why.

What people care about, is why so many news organizations breathlessly reported as fact things that were trivially falsifiable, indeed false, and in many cases *known false* before the stories were published and/or broadcast.
To their credit, some are now admitting their own research departments were warning them about 'unverifiable facts'. But even given that, how it was these stories went forward *anyway* is something they're desperate to not talk about.

So, instead, we get a story about spreadsheet.

A story that, from a proper news organization, would be headlined "Manti Te'o keeps digging". But to neatly illustrate that the problems of access journalism remain even after someone has been exposed as an utterly untrustworthy individual, the fact that the spreadsheet is completely unverifiable is casually mentioned once and forgotten, in a story written and headlined as though the call logs were hand delivered by Ralph de la Vega.

All because this guy plays football well, for a school with a historically-relevant football program.
