There's a rather famous pic from the OKC bombing of a fireman holding a dying kid.
I make me cry my eyes out every time, being so strong, brave, and helpless... Heart wrenching.

The baby was initially found by a cop who then handed the baby off. The cop eventually quit the department and then later committed suicide. Possibly from PTSD

I have a bad feeling this is going to turn into a mr freeze pic thread. Anyhow, number 14 was one of my favs as I can just see the operations manager telling the mechanics to get that truck ready to roll in 2 hours.
Thanks for sharing, subs

Awesome pictures - reminded me of the ice storm on Lake Geneva (Switzerland) a few years back, except in this case, the "ice storm" was delivered by firehose.

Anyone have historic information on that building? All I can seem to find is that it's currently an abandoned warehouse.

Man, I've been tossing around the idea of moving to Chicago, but this confirms that it may just be a tad *too* cold there.

Only during months with an "R" in them.

See....this is why I moved to Vegas.

But glory me, them are some incredible pix. Haven't seen one that big since the Helene Curtis warehouse that burned for Backdraft.

Love the Chicago Fire Department.Grew up in a firehouse.

Water sprayed in the cold, how does it work?

Until two weeks ago, it was remarkably warm. In all of the photos of Lake Michigan, it was clear -- when normally there would be ice floating everywhere and the harbors would be completely covered with it.

Yup. Just saw on the news this morning that the hotspots flared up again. Crazy.

BalugaJoe: The building is on fire again!

Yep. The FD spokesperson on the news this morning said it was never 100% out in the first place. They can't go inside because the building is so unstable. All they can to is put water on it from the ladder trucks and just try to control it at this point. It's an abandon building so really, zero farks are given about it.

One article said "The warehouse was formerly the Harris Marcus Group Building, a lamp manufacturer". Probably been empty a long time though

I guess not lamps but furniture. Some old pics from inside.

Lee Bey (a Chicago architecture guy) did a piece about it on wbez, the local NPR station. I'm too lazy to see if its online anywhere, but basically he said the building was built as part of an early 20th century office park. It fell into disuse in the 1950s when companies started moving to the suburbs.

Which may eventually be a good thing, since insurance can cash out the lot and it can go into redevelopment. Unless it's on a superfund site, then it's just gonna be an empty lot with rubble.

Nobody mentions that it was all for the Chicago Fire TV show?

2013-01-24 04:53:32 PM
This gave me a flashback to a 5 alarm fire from when I was a child. The big difference is the death toll. And the pictures were in the private hands of my mother's boss from back then. The pictures with all of the ice from the fire hoses had bodies encased in the ice. Link

Thank you, abhorrent1 and Bpjosep!
