Just saw the video. Kid kinda deserved it. Not to say that an adult should kick a kid in the ribs.....but he was totally asking for it.

Yea I'm trying to figure out why the kid doubled over the ball in the first place. I'm surprised we didn't hear him screaming "IT'S MINE!"

Kid totally deserved to be kicked and the player totally deserved the red card.

This.  The guy just kicked the ball out from under the kid.  Little bastard was laying on it.  WTF was that shiat?

Is it sad that the kid totally took a dive and even started looking around for a card?

While the kid isn't innocent, you wouldn't expect a professional athlete/soccer player/whatever to kick the kid hard in the ribs. Yes he was trying to get the ball, but why not ask the ref to do something about it or get a teammate to help you out. They got 6 minutes of added time anyway so obviously that was part of it. I know your team is quite shiat and you are about to be dumped out, but don't be an asshole about it. He needs to be suspended at least 5-10 games. Eric Cantona kicked an adult and was suspended for something like 8 months so we'll see what happens.

He was trying to run the clock down for his home team.

Eh.

-The ball "boy" looks like he could be as old as some of the players
- it's his job to chase down loose balls, not obstruct a player who's basically got the ball already
- he rolled around like he'd been shot when the guy nudged him with his toe at worst

My outrage is minimal

This. Sometimes some people just need a swift kick in the ribs, or face, and this little shiatstain deserved one.

That soccer player was only doing what needed to be done.

The kid was milking that kick for all it's worth. He will make a great Soccer player when he is older.

He got toe poked, he didnt get kicked nearly as hard as he tried to make it seem. You have a kid who has the honor to be in the position he is in (I'm sure tons of kids would love to have his job) and instead of doing what he is supposed to do (throw/hand the ball to hazard). He fake falls worse than an italian, purposefully trying to cover the ball (the ball almost squeezes out form under his muffin top but one last effort kept it in there) and has a direct effect on the game.... He fights hazard off him from getting the ball by using his hands so hazard gives him a little toe-poke and he acts as if he got shot. This isn't some innocent little snowflake. This is a little bastard of the highest order.

As I said..adults shouldn't kick kids and sure Hazard deserved a red card.

But the kid deserved what he got. And probably deserves to lose his job as ball boy and a slap in the face from his mum.

2013-01-23 08:42:00 PM
Uncalled for yes, but after watching the video a few times, ball boy got what deserved. Ball boy should have been given a red too.

2013-01-23 09:00:51 PM
First of all, that ball boy was a ginger, was trying to milk the clock, took a dive, and rolled around like an idiot after being toe poked. If that doesn't deserve a kicking, I don't know what does. Second, why do they need a ball boy walking on the field in front of the barriers at all? Something tells me the ball boy should be behind the barrier and ventured out to be a dick for his team.

2013-01-23 09:05:38 PM
according to the commentary that followed the replay, One of the commentators said when he was a ball boy you were told to slow down if your team is ahead and to hurry up if your team is behind. So it appears the ball boy is following orders/tradition. I agree that Hazard would have been smart to get the ref and I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt the kid.

Seems afterwards they both realized it was just part of the game and life goes on. Like it should.

2013-01-23 09:07:51 PM
I was at the match where Jon Busch got a one game suspension for striking the ball kid. Very similar play. Towards the end of the match, Kansas City was winning, ball rolls over the touch line away from the goal line. Jon Bush turns to get a new ball from the ball kid, but the ball kid ran across the back line to retrieve the other ball and then walks back to Busch holding the ball out to give it to him. Busch claps and motions that he wants the ball thrown to him but the kid just holds it out, so Bush runs over, smacks the kids arm, grabs the ball with one hand and gives him a little shove with the other.

I'm a big Kansas City fan but that ball kid really shouldn't ever "work" another game. At the same time, there's no reason for a pro athlete to lash out and lose their cool like that.

A kick is a bit worse than a shove, and Hazard should sit out 2-4 games, but that Swans ball kid really ought never be in another game. Still, he'll probably never need to buy another beer around town either.

Kid has a future, he sold that well.

HeathenHealer: Is it sad that the kid totally took a dive and even started looking around for a card?

The article said he's been a ball boy for several years. Lots of time to learn game strategy. In his defense, the pitch angle shows it was a pretty hard kick to the ribs. From the first angle it looked much more minor.

Glad the kid got to visit the Chelsea locker room after the game and Hazard apologized.

2013-01-23 09:23:30 PM
I get Hazard's frustration, but that was incredibly stupid and looked more malicious than a simple "okay kid, give me the ball". I'm guessing Luis Suarez will get suspended for 5 games because of Hazard's conduct.

Short response: you're a dumbass and I'm embarrassed to be associated with you as a Liverpool fan and an Arizonan.

Watch the full video. He pushed the kid down as they both tried to get the ball, harassed him and then kicked him. There is NO excuse for kicking anyone whether he deserved it or not. But this kid didn't deserve it. He was doing his job.

I just can't believe that someone attacked a ball boy and it wasn't Serena.

2013-01-23 09:39:29 PM
I saw a similar move by a player last year. It's dumb. If the ballboy is a local fan (they often are) and intentionally time-wasting at the end of the match, have the coach gripe at the refs. Done right, you oughta win a minute of stoppage for 10 seconds of wasting. Fair trade, and the kid won't do it again.

He doesn't push him. Little to no force was applied. His hands are on the boys shoulder but there is no shove. The kid purposely fell to cover the ball. And I'm sorry if being associated with me embarrasses you but if me interpreting a kids actions as malicious (which..by the way im farrrr from the only one) embarrasses you then I think the issue is with you.

If the kid was just standing au round with a lollipop in his hands and Hazard went over there and Bruce Leed him in the chest....I could understand your reaction.

Pretty obvious no call there. No decent official gives even a yellow card for that bullshiat by the ball boy. But in the Cup the officiating is always questionable.

When I played college soccer, there was always another ball behind the net. Why isn't pro soccer doing this simple act? Then the ball boy just has to get the ball ready in case it goes out again.

Well... shiat. I guess I have to fully retract my earlier post and apologize to ScouserDuck. He intended to create a problem and he did. I still say kicking the guy was out of bounds (and even if Chelsea tried to appeal the card using that tweet as evidence, I doubt it would be overturned because that kick does constitute "violent conduct") but the ball boy can't be defended here either, not with that info.

He should be prosecuted for attempted murder, like Ashley Williams. Such sensless violence in the EPL these days.

Completely deserved the red card. Yes, the kid was being a twat, but you still DON'T KICK HIM. You'll get time added on at the end, if need be, but you DON'T KICK A KID.

If that was a goalie smothering the ball, and a player did that, what do you think would have happened?

I fully admit that I don't watch much soccer.  That being said, as far as I'm concerned, even if he's a ball boy he's still part of field staff.  You treat field/court/ice staff like that in ANY sport in America and watch how fast you become unemployed, even if the kid was being a douche, which he was.

\hell, any number of "douchebag older brother" movie role actors look just like him

Douchebag.

2013-01-24 09:52:16 AM
While I understand the frustration, the ref is going to add extra time at the end to compensate.

You can't kick anyone, much less a kid, who's laying on the ground without looking like a complete ass. You have to wait til later when everyone is going to the locker rooms and there aren't any cameras around.

2013-01-24 10:11:29 AM
Too bad the 17-year-old wasn't a fighter. Would've loved to see him react to that by beating the sh*t out of the player instead of reacting like, well, a soccer player.

And he was wasting time, but it was initially only going to be by going over slowly to get the ball and taking his time. The player sees him going slow and then runs over and pushes him to try to get the ball. FFS, man, if you put as much effort into actually playing the game as you did trying to get the ball from the kid, you might have even scored a goal.

It's part of the game and home-field advantage. It goes on in every sport in every country. You guys never heard of hometown clock operators?

/former ball-boy for an arena team
//game was close toward the end, my team has the ball? I'm getting the ball to the ref a little faster than I ordinarily would. Opponent has the ball while down? That ball might take a little longer to get there.
