This coming from the same NFL crushes small businesses that dare to use the phrase "Super Bowl" in print.

"Harbowl" is merely how Arnold Schwarzenegger pronounces the word "horrible."

I thought they tried a few years ago but it's already trade marked by Cal & Stanford. They've been calling it the Big Game for over a hundred years.

Well, if you are an individual and a large entity wants your patent or trademark, you better accept their offer or they will break you with time and legal fees.

/sad really
//this guy didnt even get an offer. He didnt even ask for much. Why the fark would anyone want an autographed photo of Goodell?

2013-01-23 09:55:03 PM
This guy should get a bunch of money out of this.

Had he put a bet before the season on these two matching up in the superbowl Harbowl, it would be a huge payout.

NFL doesn't like that someone beat them at their own game.

Trademarks become null if there is no intention to use it for marketing. ie: You can't do what this guy did and just trademark stuff and hope someone stumbles into having to buy you off. NFL is in the right for once.

2013-01-23 09:57:33 PM
FTFA: He first asked the league to reimburse him for his costs to file for the trademarks. He also asked for a couple of Colts season tickets and an autographed photo of league commissioner Roger Goodell.

He says the person within the league office he spoke to denied all his requests

Oh COME ON. This guy could have asked for a HELL of a lot more than season tickets and an autographed photo. Just give them to him and make him go away. This reminds me of the story of the The Princeton Review founder John Katzman registering a bunch of domain names (including that of his competitor) and selling them to the companies who wanted them for cases of beer. His competitor, Kaplan, didn't want to send him beer and decided to sue in court to get the domain name.

Now if only we could have the same use it or lose it on Patents so we can go back to a sane society.

Yeah, because research universities like MIT, Cornell, or Johns Hopkins shouldn't be able to license the fruits of their research to pay for more research.

/naive solution is naive
//if your complaint is huge damages to patent trolls, then focus your solution on damages, not on the mere fact that trolls and other non-practicing entities exist

I'd much rather the lawmakers do something to stop the abuse of patents to prevent companies from making competing products and creating a monopoly on technology with no competition to force prices down. AKA: What Apple does.

The problem is if you acquiesce to demands like this once, next year you have hundreds of chancers trying to do the same thing tying up your legal team in frivolous cases.

He could say he had a plan to market it if both Harbaughs coached against each other in the Super Bowl. Just like when PAt Riley trademarked Threepeat.

Well, in this one, I think the guy deserved it, as he was being no better than a patent troll by trademarking them in the first place.

The Maple Leafs were going to sue you, but the lawyer tripped on the way to the courtroom and dropped the papers down a storm drain.
