You can't have river song involved without it breaking canon, right?

As cool as that would be, I'm not going to hold my breath.
"So all eleven Doctors and River Song? Sounds great, right? NOT SO FAST says Colin Baker! The sixth Doctor has already denied the Birmingham Mail's claims by tweeting: "...apart from The Big Finish plans I am not aware of any 50th stories nor have I been approached."

Well, there's still a long way between that story and now so...

I thought I had heard that Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith were going to be in the 50th, but the idea that ALL the actors were coming back is news to me.

Then again the article quotes Colin Baker saying it's all a big fat lie, so who knows.

Besides, Tom Baker has said he wouldn't be interesting in returning for the 50th Anniversary unless it was for a short comical bit where the 4th Doctor isn't actually involved, just kind of a time echo in the TARDIS.

/I'm hoping they call come back.
//Moffatt would go up exponentially in my estimation if he made this work.

I'm hoping they go old school and make it a 3-part story. Even a 4-part story.

Maybe, just maybe, Baker 2 has been asked to keep things under wraps to keep the surprise a bit longer?

Or, they haven't locked down everything yet and started approaching the actors yet.

Speaking of regenerations, a story like this would be the perfect time to get Carole Ann Ford in one last time and have Susan regenerate into a new form that can be used from here on.

The five doctors was good. It was not 'the stuff of legend', but it was good. What made it work was only three of them really did much. What made the Avengers work is that instead of 30 characters, they focused on six. Eleven characters in 90 minutes? They'd be better off doing a whole anniversary season and spreading them out as opposed to pushing them into a single event.

/maybe that's the plan?

Yeah, it's a real toss up at this point, just kind of annoying that there's articles like this out there claiming one thing, but then going back and saying "Except well, maybe not". I would at least like Nine to make an appearance, I really enjoyed his Doctor and wish he'd stayed on another series or 3.

Doctor rescues River from the library computer, puts her in a new/clone body, no regeneration needed.

Not necessarily. I'm sure they could come up with some sort of phlebotinum to bring her back afterr that if they wanted.
Although I'd rather they not, as her death when we first met her makes her subsequent apearences somewhat bittersweet, which would be lost if they found a way to bring her back.

Unless she became part of the TARDIS...

Every site is trying to fanfark on this one, but I doubt they will get them all. I'm sure it will have the NuWho ones, perhaps McGann and whomever needs the least amount of CGI to look like their younger selves but that's it.

In other words, fanboi speculation.

I'm sure they could. Hell I'm betting there's entire gb's worth of fanfic out there depicting how it could be done. Personally I think it'd be a good way to say farewell to River, she did mention seeing him with a different face the last time she saw him. Could be like TFA was saying that she's somehow responsible for getting all of them together and one of his incarnations is the last one she talks to before the Library and he gives her a modified sonic.

I like River, I really do, but she's kinda been played out now that there's little to no mystery around her. That and I think she was as over used as the Weeping Angels.

Every time I've read about Eccleston not being involved with a Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode, I've always thought "...because Voltron vs. The Bionic Six vs. Silverhawks is filming that week?"

He did a GI Joe movie... surely another Doctor Who appearance couldn't be out of the question.

And now, it doesn't seem to be, which is fantastic.

I don't know.
I wouldn't set my hopes too high. Not sure there's a story that would survive trying to cram in 11 sort of protagonists (especially with some of them dead or aged a lot).
Maybe they'll do some montage like in Smith's first episode with the "is this world protected?" bit.
Or I could imagine some sort of video conference where CGI versions of the old ones squabble a bit with each other and give advice or do some offscreen job while Smith, Tennant and maybe Ecclestone do some running around (think Harry Potter and the portraits of former headmasters); I haven't seen "The Five Doctors" yet, but "The Three Doctors" was a bit like that with #2 and #3 doing the legwork and #1 more or less literally (video-)phoning it in while telling the two others to get their shiat together.

Well, I had a theory about that: What if that was River's clone? River getting her regenerations back would have a side-effect similar to what happened to the Doctor during "Journey's End" with River returning to the future and the clone River helping the Doctors. THAT River would die at "Slience" but the real River would eventually regenerate and see the Doctor again.

Silly but what the hell since we're throwing stuff out there...

That was also done for age-related reasons...

William Hartnell was too close to death to run around with Troughton and Pertwee as originally planned. So, they stuffed Hartnell in a box, let him read his lines to a camera, and let the younger guys do the heavy lifting.

Using this technique with the two Bakers in a modern show would also work, since they're the two who really couldn't pass as their former selves any longer.

Haven't some of the actors passed away? You'd need some sort of time machine.

While there are obvious problems with trying to do a story with ALL the previous incarnations, I would love a Nu-Era version of the 5 Doctors with McGann, Eccleston, Tennant and Smith.

/McGann was my first Doctor, and while the movie wasn't really good, he was brilliant and had the best TARDIS.

If Moffat does have the classic Doctors back, it will be for some sort of documentary. He appreciates the classic Who, but he has also said in interviews that marketing classic Who to today's audiences would be difficult. Moffat is a master at creating eye candy and sugary scripts, so he probably won't want to try anything with depth here. Just some interviews or some "classic" clips here and there.

I'm betting it will be stitched together from previous footage 'enhanced' with a lot of CGI type lip synching and editing. Probably in some type of ST:NG plot where the Present, and Past TADRIS have to work together---but remotely.
