Smeg is only #2?

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!?!?

Knew 'frak' was going to be #1 before even clicking on the link. Personally I think it was so overused that it lost its value.

Loved seeing nerf-herder on there.

Personally, I think "frell" should be Number 1, and no I will not never frelling get over Bonnie Hammer frelling canceling Farscape. Frak should be on the list but not number one, but I do think you are right about it being so overused it lost its value.

Can't see list at work. Does it include Smeghead or the even better SMEEEEE HEEEEEEEE?

2013-01-23 01:56:47 PM
I don't really consider "nerf-herder" to fit in that list. I mean, it's an insult, but it's about as profane as calling someone a redneck.

FunkyBlue: Can't see list at work. Does it include Smeghead or the even better SMEEEEE HEEEEEEEE?

10) "PetaQ" (Star Trek).
9) "Bagropa" (Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars).
8) "Frag" and "Shrock" (tie) (Babylon 5).
7) "Drokk" (Judge Dredd).
6) Shazbot (Mork and Mindy).
5) "Grahzny Bratchny" (A Clockwork Orange).
4) "Frell" (Farscape).
3) "Nerf herder" (Star Wars).
2) Smeg (Red Dwarf).
1) "Frak" (Battlestar Galactica).

(Weirdly, the URL says it's the top nine. I wonder which one they added in at the last second.)

2013-01-23 02:54:42 PM

miniflea: Tanj dammit, everything is from tv or movies.

It's a pop culture site, it has to draw examples from things that most of its audience have seen.

Plus, if you go into novels you're going to expand the number of inventive curses exponentially, because for the most part writers aren't making new words and phrases as a substitution for an English curse, they're putting it in there because they genuinely enjoy writing insults, curses, and profanities.

//Besides, everyone knows that the most offensive curse in the universe is "Go stick your head in a pig".
//"Frack" was clearly just so that "fark" could be easily white-outed and substituted on a script with a mono-spaced font, not terribly creative at all. Frell was a slightly better joke since it actually had a divergent meaning and sound.

I did like in the new BSG when Starbuck offered the flight crew some toothpaste that had a "curse word" from the original BSG on it. Basically, it turned out to be Bullshiat Toothpaste, which explains why the crew was less than excited about the prospect.

I thought so too until the fracking boom, now I think it's perfectly useful again. Also, I think the fact that it was used so much is the reason it's #1.

Huh. And it seemed like the perfect candidate for one of those things that got misheard and then the misheard version was ret-conned into something "real". But, after a quick googling, I guess it was in the script. Weird.

I'm partial to Gurney Halleck's "Gods below!" from Dune (the books, anyway).

While lacking the shock value of "God damnit!", it's something I can say in front of the rampant Baptist busybodies in this state, and it actually cuts them a little deeper.

It's no "Frak!" or "Gorrammit!", but it's something they can grok, and I derive a sublime pleasure from reducing their deity to an attention-starved bratty child without actually blaspheming.
