WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!?!?

Beat me to it.

What the smegging smeg?

I'm with those who say "nerf herder" is meant to be an insult, not a profanity. For Star Wars profanities, I always enjoyed "stang" or "sithspit."

Of course that depends on your stance of the EU.

What about the Hitchhikers classic Zarking Fardwarks....

Edymnion: RoyFokker'sGhost: Also, if the pseudo Russian from Clockwork Orange made it in, why not the awesome Chinese swearing in Firefly/Serenity, gorrammit?

They said at the beginning of TFA that the Firefly chinese swears were not being included because they already did an entire article on just that, ya frelling smeghead. =P

Fine but what about Ruttin and Humped.

Stars and Stones!  No Dresden on this list?  It's only TV and Movies i guess.  books don't count anymore.   Frack that, it's lame.

But it is a profanity, which would qualify.

"Frak" and its ilk are obscenity (sex/excretory (sexcretory!) functions).
"Gorram" and suchlike are profanity (implication of Divine Wrath).
Know the difference so you can be pedantic about it!

The article is about pretend swearing. It does not qualify because it is real swearing.

The list is populated entirely with made up profanity, but you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct.

I use frell somewhat infrequently in my life, and am always surprised no one ever gives me a perplexed look.

Of course, they never give it a second thought when I say 'gravy' instead of 'groovy' either, so perhaps most just assume I have a speech impediment.

Foonting turlingdromes, the lot of 'em.

OK, that leaves swut & juju-flop to me. I'll rend the listmaker in the gobberworts with my blurglecruncheon for his omissions, see if I don't!

Jim_Callahan:
//"Frack" was clearly just so that "fark" could be easily white-outed and substituted on a script with a mono-spaced font, not terribly creative at all. Frell was a slightly better joke since it actually had a divergent meaning and sound.

Only a vaRool would use such language in public.

2013-01-23 08:45:27 PM
Wait wait wait. Did Leia actually say "nerf herder"? As in, is that the text in the script?

Because I always thought she was just saying "nerve hurter", which yes is a lame insult, but at least actually makes sense. :-/

/is this one of those "that's the joke" moments?

No, she actually said nerf herder. Hell in the Star Wars MMO you actually come across wild nerfs on some planets. Think buffalo crossed with a mammoth. (at least if I remember correctly. Stopped playing months ago.)

Huh. And it seemed like the perfect candidate for one of those things that got misheard and then the misheard version was ret-conned into something "real". But, after a quick googling, I guess it was in the script. Weird.

[tinfoil hat]unless every reference has been changed to make the ret-con real[/tinfoil hat]

I just looked up something on Urbandictionary....So these people using gorram are aping Firefly?

All this time I thought they were trying to mimic some kilted sheep-f*cker saying "goddamn".
/gormless wonders, the lot of you.

Frell is the only one on that list I've actually used in day to day life. It rolls off the tongue quite nicely.

Smeg on the other hand, I thought was just a shortening of Smegma. Which I suppose is on par with calling someone a quivering pile of santorum.

Terry Pratchett always had a colorful vocab but nothing pops up in my mind.

EU = A thousand fanfic writers that all get instant canon status as long as they can find some publisher desperate enough to actually print their smeg.

No swearing in Chinese?

And frankly after watching Quantum Leap.... "Oh Boy!" counts.

Just further proof for my theory that Farscape is the best scifi show ever made.

Slives: Knew 'frak' was going to be #1 before even clicking on the link. Personally I think it was so overused that it lost its value.

Loved seeing nerf-herder on there.

Agreed, I think Drokk was a lot more evocative and a lot less on-the-nose.

I'm partial to Gurney Halleck's "Gods below!" from Dune (the books, anyway).

While lacking the shock value of "God damnit!", it's something I can say in front of the rampant Baptist busybodies in this state, and it actually cuts them a little deeper.

It's no "Frak!" or "Gorrammit!", but it's something they can grok, and I derive a sublime pleasure from reducing their deity to an attention-starved bratty child without actually blaspheming.
