Smeg is only #2?

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!?!?

2013-01-23 12:44:43 PM
Knew 'frak' was going to be #1 before even clicking on the link. Personally I think it was so overused that it lost its value.

Loved seeing nerf-herder on there.

2013-01-23 01:42:25 PM
List fails without D'Arvit.

2013-01-23 01:46:10 PM
I always thought "grok" sounded pretty dirty

2013-01-23 01:46:42 PM
It's spelled p'taH, subby.

Personally, I think "frell" should be Number 1, and no I will not never frelling get over Bonnie Hammer frelling canceling Farscape. Frak should be on the list but not number one, but I do think you are right about it being so overused it lost its value.

According to Okrand's original Klingon Dictionary, it's petaQ.

No "God's teeth"? Tanj.

List fails without Belgium.

Not to mention, "Nerfherder" is an insult, not profanity.

2013-01-23 01:55:26 PM
"Belgium!"

2013-01-23 01:56:01 PM
Can't see list at work. Does it include Smeghead or the even better SMEEEEE HEEEEEEEE?

2013-01-23 01:56:47 PM
I don't really consider "nerf-herder" to fit in that list. I mean, it's an insult, but it's about as profane as calling someone a redneck.

FunkyBlue: Can't see list at work. Does it include Smeghead or the even better SMEEEEE HEEEEEEEE?

10) "PetaQ" (Star Trek).
9) "Bagropa" (Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars).
8) "Frag" and "Shrock" (tie) (Babylon 5).
7) "Drokk" (Judge Dredd).
6) Shazbot (Mork and Mindy).
5) "Grahzny Bratchny" (A Clockwork Orange).
4) "Frell" (Farscape).
3) "Nerf herder" (Star Wars).
2) Smeg (Red Dwarf).
1) "Frak" (Battlestar Galactica).

(Weirdly, the URL says it's the top nine. I wonder which one they added in at the last second.)

Takes Nerd Card Platinum since the word has been spelled various ways as the article points out.

Anything with a useage and meaning outside of Sci-fi should not be on the list....

So, they choose 'frak' as #1, but completely overlook the awesome 'felgercarp' from OBSG? Weak.

Also, if the pseudo Russian from Clockwork Orange made it in, why not the awesome Chinese swearing in Firefly/Serenity, gorrammit?

You can take that goram attitude and shove it!

Being a big Red Dwarf fan, it provoked some amusement when I noticed my new house's fitted kitchen includes a Smeg cooker/hob.

2013-01-23 02:26:06 PM
Glad to see that Frell made the list, in the top 5, as it should be. Sad they missed the almost-as-frequently-used "dren" and "yotz."

/Fahrbot frellniks anyway...

Tanj dammit, everything is from tv or movies.

Mr. Eugenides: List fails without [CENSORED].

Any Pie Left: "[CENSORED]!"

Hey hey hey! We do have *SOME* standards around here. Sheesh.

RoyFokker'sGhost: Also, if the pseudo Russian from Clockwork Orange made it in, why not the awesome Chinese swearing in Firefly/Serenity, gorrammit?

They said at the beginning of TFA that the Firefly chinese swears were not being included because they already did an entire article on just that, ya frelling smeghead. =P

Where is Spock cursing? List is bogus without it.

"They like you very much, but they are not the hell your whales."

Dear Lord, how had I forgotten about "Shazbot?"

2013-01-23 02:54:42 PM

miniflea: Tanj dammit, everything is from tv or movies.

It's a pop culture site, it has to draw examples from things that most of its audience have seen.

Plus, if you go into novels you're going to expand the number of inventive curses exponentially, because for the most part writers aren't making new words and phrases as a substitution for an English curse, they're putting it in there because they genuinely enjoy writing insults, curses, and profanities.

//Besides, everyone knows that the most offensive curse in the universe is "Go stick your head in a pig".
//"Frack" was clearly just so that "fark" could be easily white-outed and substituted on a script with a mono-spaced font, not terribly creative at all. Frell was a slightly better joke since it actually had a divergent meaning and sound.

I did like in the new BSG when Starbuck offered the flight crew some toothpaste that had a "curse word" from the original BSG on it. Basically, it turned out to be Bullshiat Toothpaste, which explains why the crew was less than excited about the prospect.

I thought so too until the fracking boom, now I think it's perfectly useful again. Also, I think the fact that it was used so much is the reason it's #1.

Glad to see "shazbot" on there, too. ((Agree with nerf herder, too.)

petaQ? Meh, as for most of the rest.

Reminded me of SG1's poke at Farscape: Link.

2013-01-23 03:26:41 PM
I've been rewatching Red Dwarf on Netflix, so I was happy to see it so high up on the list. I knew Frak would be #1 though.

Why the yotz wasn't Farscape better represented?
