I was under the impression the poor were there for me to mock at my leisure.
Was I so wrong?

But she's in politics, where the term "politically correct" actually has some meaning.

No, in fact I'm eating a pop-tart. They're cheaper.

Here in Chicago, you can spot them by the bags of Flamin' Hot Cheetos they eat for breakfast

It's the UK, that very well may be what she meant. Their words for small baked goods are confusing.

This is why politics is broken. You can't speak the truth without being pilloried.

She is also in the UK. They are not nearly as worried about offending every single person as the US is. My mother pointed out this fact to me 20 years ago. Poor people are generally fatter due to the fact the inexpensive / filling foods are fattening. Wealthier people can afford healthier diets.

I don't mind being called "fat" or a "fatty", but it does sting a little when the derision is coming from a someone with the mental acuity of a brick and the emotional depth of a mud puddle.  Okay?

People ask "Why are the poor so fat?"...

Because eating healthy is expensive, a $1 Honey Bun is the nutritional equivalent to "Old Roy" but for the poor it's cheap and filling.

Political correctness is two decades old now. I think we are ready to move on to the next stage. Just make speaking the truth a felony.

Here in the U.S, it is actually cheaper to eat healthy. Fish, Fruits, vegetables, etc are very inexpensive and often times cheaper than the fattening/unhealthy food.

This is absolutely true in the US. Why wouldn't it be the same for the UK? Crap food is cheap in first world countries.

I'm in the same boat as you (well, maybe not the same boat.. we'd probably capsize it).  I'm from a poor family, though, so I suspect a lot of it has to do with the eating habits I picked up as a youngster.

It's true... I work 12 hour workdays 5 (sometimes six) days a week... I make lunches on my weekend, but for breakfast and sometimes dinner, I grab whatever seems fastest and cheap... I know pop tarts aren't good for me, but I'm trying to get by on about 6.5 hours of sleep a night already, cutting down to six just so I could have something better seems impractical. Aside from all that, I take the bus for about an hour to get to safeway, so fresh fruits (I have canned stuff) doesn't last the two weeks in between shopping trips, so I know I've got some peaks and valleys going on nutritionally. That said, I'm not fat, work keeps me on my feet and moving most of the day.

Eating healthy is, sometimes, expensive. But more importantly, it requires time to cook, care in preparation, and education. (Well educated people with an abundance of willpower tend to be... less prone to poverty.)

A not-poor person with the same work obligations and time constraints can still pay somebody else to prepare healthy food for them, and can pay $100/month for the privilege of watching TV on a treadmill - assuming it's important to them to be fit.

Pre-prepared healthy food IS more expensive.
And all that's completely ignoring things like urban food deserts. So much for affordable fresh produce.

I don't know where you live, but in NC they charge by the pc not the pound. $1 a pepper, $1 an apple etc. It's disgusting.

But there are a ton of bread stores that sell expired little debbie style snack cakes for .69 a box that have 6-12 cakes per box.

Tell me which one the poor would choose?

How noble of this politician to "speak the truth" making fun of the poor over their limited access to healthy food. Don't let the evil forces of political correctness stop you from kicking a class who's already down.

Fark being politically correct.
I'd rather vote for someone that was honest and spoke their mind.

Now you have to be careful how you word things,
You can't use a broad brush.
You can say, there are some of you out there, that are too lazy to work, and too unmotivated to work, and not inclined to even look up the word "bootstraps" in a dictionary.
that would get my vote.
Not You people be all farked up and your shait's reta'ded.

i go to a 7-11 to get a drink most mornings at work. its a social water cooler type activity at my office. we are not located in a nice part of ft lauderdale (oakland park). every morning i see local kids and their parents getting food for breakfast and/or school lunch. the most common items are honey buns, cheetos, doritos, ruffles, etc...

sad to see actually.
