Well he really only has two choices in the matter. He could admit that he was in on it the whole time and be viewed as a lying douchebag, or he could admit he had no idea the entire time and be viewed as a giant gullible dummy. I guess he went with the latter option.

I have only been paying a little attention to this. The guy is mormon. I wonder if he's done all of this to hide the fact that he fancies men and is hiding it. The guy stepped into some pretty nasty sh*t with this one when the media picked up on it, though.

Te'o should be scanned for CTE before the draft.

While I admit I love this story, I feel bad for the kid too.  I'm not saying the media should treat NCAA athletes with kid gloves, but they are being pretty inappropriate, considering they were the irresponsible ones who were duped by all this.  The media outlets, if anyone, should be most embarrassed.

Book smarts and a whooolle lot of naivete aren't mutually exclusive.

At least this happened to him before he has an NFL salary.

The media outlets told Manti to proclaim his love for a girl he never met? The media told Manti to tell the story about her supposed death? The media reports on a lot of stupid things, but Manti's naivete made this story happen. The media is covering the story because it is so bizarre.

I think there's a possibility for a third option, although at this juncture I'm not sure what to word/define it as.

The only things that really stick out to me are how it "didn't cross his mind" at any point in time to visit the supposed love of his life in the hospital (again, not "I couldn't feasibly afford to go/had scheduling conflicts" but literally "never crossed my mind"), and the half-hearted attempts AT BEST in general to actually meet this girl. So, even if was 100% duped, he sounds kind of like an asshole and/or lacking a certain level emotional maturity to be in a real relationship in the first place.

/seriously, "never crossed your mind"? You're either a f*cking prick or completely aloof.

I can call WRHG or whatever today, and give them some bogus story.  If they run the story because they want to be the first to break the news, without bothering to check the legitimacy, that's on them.

Te'o is a college athlete, not a professional or public figure, and he has no obligation to disclose matters of his personal life to the press.  Shame on the press, which is supposed to be professional, for running with this dumb story for months.

I think we are on level 457 by now.

At first i thought the story was really weird and wanted to know more, was he lying, is he covering something up. who hoaxed him if its true... then we learned about as much as we are going to learn. Then the story got boring and old. And now i think we are firmly into beating a dead horse territory.

At this point i think the carrying on of this story says a LOT More about the culture of media in the USA than it says anything about a dumb university kid who may or may not have tried to scam people with a dead fake girlfriend.

2013-01-23 02:19:12 PM
personally, i find this story entertaining. you never know what to expect. i think it's clear that he was duped, then so embarrassed that he went along with it hoping to cover it or have it disappear. from the interviews it seems that though manti maybe a great leader of men on the field, he's social q factor is essentially zero. i'm excited for the next twist in this crazy story.

/i also enjoy the fact that this whole mess was coordinated by a tuiasosopo, not exact a family unfamiliar with football.

That's a big problem.  I was watching the pregame Sunday and they had Cris Carter on.  He was very insightful:

"That wasn't scheming.  That guy hasn't seen scheming yet.  Wait until he starts making NFL money.  Then he'll really see some scheming women.  If he fell for that, he has no idea what life in the NFL has in store for him."

Carter is right.  You see guys in the NFL getting played from all angles once they start making the big bucks - from women, friends, investment opportunities, family.  Te'o is now a mark.

probably the homosexuality. he was probably getting ass thrown at him left and right, and was getting ragged on by his team for not hitting it. so he gets this internet girlfriend.

So lets all agree with Te'o's claim he was fooled for years by this fake girl. Now please tell me how your academic standards are so vastly superior to those of Michigan and you would never bend them to let an athlete in whereas we are scum with no standards. Go on. I'll just be over here with the Stanford grads waiting...

serpent_sky: Why are there 700 stories about this guy every single day? I really fail to see what is so interesting about it.

Well, first of all, it's just a very strange story.  Some sort of internet hoax that morphed into a huge part of the storyline in Notre Dame's resurgent season and later part of Te'o's Heisman campaign.  There were rumblings on campus and on the team that this girl wasn't really Te'o's "girlfriend" and he was playing it up for the attention.  And with other colleges, I doubt it would be that much of a big deal, but Notre Dame makes such a big deal out of its own self-creating mythology - The Four Horsemen, "win one for the Gipper," Rudy, and on and on and on, and then this story about Te'o having "the game of his life" on the day he found out his grandmother AND his beloved leukemia-suffering girlfriend died.  And it turns out to be a big load of hooey.  Just like Rudy was just an annoying, over-enthusiastic kid on the practice squad who basically parlayed a practical joke appearance in a meaningless play at the end of a game into an entire career.  And the media served up this narrative gleefully without doing a shred of fact checking, and I guess to a point do you really go poking around for death certificates and things like that?  Probably not, but somewhere someone at one of the networks, or Sports Illustrated should have looked at this and said, "Something doesn't seem right here."  So, it's a combination - weird story, egg on the face of Notre Dame and ESPN, et al.

Kind of. The media wants some sort of vindication because they were fooled and embarassed. Either they can ride the tide of sympathy if Manti Te'o was just naive, or they can publicly crucify him and his character if not.

Sheldon Cooper is an extremely smart man. That doesn't mean he isn't stupid at things most people would consider basic for human survival.

Manti Te'o is an extremely good football player, and smart enough to pass Notre Dame's strict entrance exams. That doesn't mean he had the ability to avoid being fooled in the same ways his grandma might be fooled.
