Best of all, since they are government chimps they'll have an enormous pension and healthcare for life.

Calling those guys "Chimps" is insulting to the poor chimpanzees. I prefer the moniker "seat Warmers" because that's most of what they do.

I immediately thought of an email with pics of chimps and the last one being of Michelle Obama. That would be racist.

But, a few years ago I received an email fwd: showing multiple pics of George W. making faces and each had side by side a pic of a chimp making the same face. That was not racist.

That's correct.  In the US, there is a long history of comparing Black people to non-human primates, in order to belittle them and rationalize maltreatment.  There is no history of doing that to white people.

The "Bush or Chimp" pictures might be considered unfunny, even insulting1, but they are not "racist."

1: To either Bush or the chimps, you decide.

I wonder how a chimp with PTSD behaves. I suppose you can give them antidepressants. I don't see any downsides to that.

read "love at goon park".  it's about the first monkey affection (sigh...just don't go there) experiments by harlow.  he was actually very, very upset that he couldn't cure the monkeys after he finished the experiments.
it's very well written, deborah blum is great (almost as good as mary roach!)

They act out a lot, just like humans.

The people who are going to take them in have their work cut out for them. It's a big adjustment to go from cages in a room to a grassy area with trees. A lot of animals (primate or not) get very anxious.

Most of them will probably be put down. Too dangerous to let them out of the lab and they are very expensive to care for...

Oooops. Sorry mods (et al). To me medical images barely register on my OMG-o-meter anymore.

big pig peaches: I wonder how a chimp with PTSD behaves. I suppose you can give them antidepressants. I don't see any downsides to that.

My response contained a pic of the poor woman who had fer face destroyed by the primate in Connecticut a few years back.
Suffice to say massive caution is in order when dealing with primates. They have a greater strength of humans per/pound.
So....a 75 pound chimpanzee could likely beat down a 200 pound man with relative ease, to say nothing of the damage it could inflict.

Linky for citation

Bottom line? Pissing off, or keeping primates as pets? Really dumb, really dangerous.

When I was in school we had a chimp come for medical treatment, and the students weren't allowed within thirty feet of its cage in case it reached through the bars and grabbed us.
