She said she was arguing with Thompson about moving her things out of her home and left the ring on the kitchen counter, according to deputies. When she went to retrieve it, she realized Thompson had the ring, said deputies, who added that he tried to force the ring down her throat while holding her down.

Guy: I want the ring back. You left it so it's mine.
Girl: No, you gave it to me!
Guy: Yeah, because we were going to be married!
Girl: Nuh-uh, it's mine
Guy: Well, if you want it that badly lets see you eat it!

The guy must have a pretty decent income to be able to watch 3 months of salary go down the gullet like that.

I bought my wife a diamond ring as an engagement ring. I love her, and I wanted to give her something that would symbolize my everlasting love for her.

If things didn't work out, I certainly wouldn't ask her to swallow it.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Thompson's girlfriend of four years contacted authorities about the incident after she left home and drove to the Walmart on West Colonial Drive.

In Florida? Ya don't say..

That's farked up. When she asks for the ring, a simple "no" should suffice.

My ex and I were cohabitating, and the day she moved out, she left a bunch of her shiat behind, including something that I had bought for her birthday. I asked her if she wanted it, and, being the taker that she was, I knew she'd say "yes". So, I said "fine" on the condition that she'd pick up the rest of her things the following day. Of course, she biatched to her friends about how I was being a douchebag and blackmailing her because I was making her pick up her own stuff. The horror! I just didn't want her to have any reason to contact me, and this, I'm guessing, pissed her off.

I was so lucky I never proposed to or married her.

I know a girl who found out her fiance was cheating on her. Big argument ensued which ended with her flushing a $7K ring down the toilet.

Maybe her not swollowing contributed to the breakup.

Well, that's a shiatty way of getting the ring back.

Eek! I think that an engagement ring is typically one of the few exceptions for gifts that you should get back if the engagement is called off.

Serves him right for cheating, though.

Why should she get the ring anyway. He paid for it so it should be his property

When I left my ex wife, I pawn off my ring the very next day.

All I got was a measly 100 dollars. I'm sure she must have got at least 500 for hers.

Yeah, she called you a psycho because you were being a psycho; but of course it's her fault you assaulted her because she called you a psycho while you were being a psycho.

By law, it must be given back.

Depends on the State.

Sounds like she made the right decision to leave him.

FTFA:
Thompson also threatened to burn her house down, prompting her to call him a "psycho,"

During the alleged attack, the woman said Thompson pushed her against a wall while she was holding a one-year-old child, said deputies, adding that Thompson covered the woman's mouth and preventing her from breathing.

he tried to force the ring down her throat while holding her down.

What could she have possibly said that would rationalize this behavior. Usually both people in a dispute have some responsibility, but in this case the guy is just a psycho.

I thought it was all over? don't laugh, but Judge Judy ALWAYS makes the girl give the ring back in those cases. Is it because the state she's presiding in hast that law? The ring is given in prospect of marriage and if that contract is broken, the dude gets the ring back. At least that's how I remember JJ explaining it.

This, which I think she's in CA.

Laws regarding the return of engagement rings vary by state. Some states incorporate a fault-based approach, while other states do not. Some state laws look at an engagement ring as a gift, while others consider it a conditional gift dependent on a future event (a wedding) taking place.

Wow, thank you! I honestly didn't know.
