I think all NRO links should have the satire tag as it is a parody of Buckley's original National Review.

Possible reasons for the media ignoring the cost of Michelle Obama's dress:

1. That is is wholly unremarkable that a multimillionaire would wear moderately expensive clothes to an incredibly important and rare event in which they are one of the centers of attention.

2. Socialist, Nazi, Liberalism.

2013-01-23 08:47:31 AM
Yaas. I see now. The First Lady should have worn Army fatigues to the inaugural ball.

No wait. That might look communist.

No, I see now. A $900 T-shirt would be just right.

No wait. That might look Walmart.

Oh what the heck. Mr. President, just tell 'em Michelle has a headache.

2013-01-23 08:49:05 AM
Let me guess...

Because of a vast libral conspiracy.

False flage operation by secret liberal groups.

Satans minions using gays to make women use abortion for birth control.

Grabbing guns from true patriots so their families can be killed to make way for the rule of The Beast and destroy Jesus and God.

That about cover it?

This all that matters is how she acquired it, did they pay for it from their own money? Did the designer give it to her? Or was it paid for from the public coffers?

Only 1 of those could be an actual story.

1. It was a farkING BIRD SHIRT!!!!

Christ! She was inviting scrutiny by wearing that garish thing. It was the whole point that the Romney's KNEW their wealth was an issue for making them 'disconnected' with average Americans... with that knowledge, you would think they would do whatever they could to avoid flaunting their wealth, so instead of wearing a discreet blouse, she goes on national TV with THAT thing on. THAT is why it got so much attention.

You know, William F. Buckley was one of my favorite writers. I didn't always agree with him, but he wrote well. He put some real thought into his essays, and he could be incredibly persuasive because there was real thought involved.

To be fair, whining liberals were biatching about how much Ann Romney's outfits were and you know the media would be talking about whatever she wore to the inauguration had Romney won. To be fair, I don't remember any such stories about Laura Bush in a leading American magazine. As awful as NRO has become since Buckley's death, it's still considered a leading magazine. Do you have any links to articles kvetching about the cost of Mrs. Bush's dress for the inauguration?

Two sentences and one picture in and I realized where I was and that it's still the NRO, so nothing's changed and I still don't give a shiat what they think about anything.

Thanks, subby.

Anybody who thinks it wouldn't have been a story if Michelle Obama went to an interview with a gaudy $900 t-shirt is and idiot.

Conservatives reported on a fake room service lobster bill, you think they would have given Michelle a pass on something they didn't have to lie about? This is just another excuse for the right to complain about Michelle Obama breathing, with extra butthurt added.

For someone who is so proud to be black she sure does work hard to look white. She should have a huge fro with a "Black Power" fist on an afro comb sticking out of it.

If you're talking about the T-shirt, I think the story there was, "Wow...look at that hideous...thing...she's wearing. For an interview. It is just...awful. Clueless And she paid $900 for that. She's wack."

And her husband was the "47% of the country is slacker/moochers who want free stuff" candidate.

No. Nancy got raked over the coals all the time. I think... I think anytime a First Lady isn't invisible, she gets hated on. There's always a reason to hate. The same thing would be happening if Ann Romney or Cindy McCain or Theresa Heinz-Kerry were first ladies.

The only person who's escaped so far is Second Lady Jill Biden -- and that's because she's Second Lady. If she were first lady, she'd be under the microscope, too.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot?

When has it ever been abnormal for women associated with the ruling class to get all dressed up? As far back as we have carved or painted illustrations, we see women dressed up fancy. Before that, they were buried in their finery, but we don't know what they wore while they were alive.

Not that their's anything wrong with that. I always thought Amy was cute (I am only two years older than her, so it was legal for me to think so) and I really sympathized when she got shiat for reading a book during a long, boring state dinner.

Yes, but then Obama's the "rich people are overprivledged and don't deserve it" candidate and then has his wife out there wearing thousand $$ outfits for everyday things. Double standard there.

I think it's stupid for either one of them to be spending that much on clothes...and I'm a woman. But it's their money. It would just be nice if Obama stopped the 1% bashing when he himself is the 1%. I just find it completely disingenuous when they not only enjoy the lavish lifestyle but flaunt it too. But they get a pass on it for some reason.

No, like the thousand dollar outfit she wore on one of the morning TV shows....just like Ann did. They made a big deal of it when Ann did it, but said nothing about Michelle. And apparently Michelle has a $1000 purse. Don't know why that's necessary.

"Bashing" the 1% by letting the temporary Bush-era tax cuts expire on incomes over a million dollars a year, in a time when corporate profits have zoomed, incomes and wealth in the top 1% have zoomed?

They "flaunt" a "lavish" lifestyle? You mean the photos of that cavernous vacation home on the lake...no wait, that was Romney. Or that hilltop estate in exclusive La Jolla with the car elev...no, Romney again.

What in particular did you mean by flaunting a lavish lifestyle? The fact that the president and his family flies on Air Force One? Like every First Family?

Yes they're in the top 1%, as Obama himself has openly declared. Does that mean he must be in favor only of policies that directly benefit him? Would that be good presidential policy? (The tax increase will be applied to his income. He will pay more.)

If Michelle Obama, or Nancy Reagan, or any First Lady, ever, didn't wear an expensive new gown to the inauguration, the reaction would be, "Who is this tasteless hick? Does she simply not care?"

Eh, this is just conservatives completely forgetting what they've said and done themselves, as usual.  FLOTUS is a fashion darling  precisely becausein addition to wearing fancy dresses for fancy occasions, she also wears a farkload of "accessible" brands.  Brands that most previous First Ladies, and the one-percenters who are acting so butthurt about all this, would think of as beneath them.

Here she is at the "Kids Inaugural Ball" last Saturday with her daughters.

abcnews.go.com

See that sparkly belt?  Here's a close-up of it.

cdn-s3-0.wanelo.com

Do you recognize the designer?  Would you say it costs $48,000, $4,800, or $480?

Actually, it's from Anthropologie, a chain found in malls across the country - nicer/more expensive than, say, American Eagle or Old Navy, but definitely  not exclusive.  And it's $48.   She also wears a lot of J.Crew, which anybody with a few hundred bucks to spend can buy at Nordstrom.  And a lot of the time, the press can't even identify what she's wearing - it's just "black pants" or whatever.

(I'm actually thinking of getting the same belt for my wife for V-Day, because I think it'd look better on her than on FLOTUS, and because I think she'd be amused by having a wardrobe item in common. It's also just about the only thing she wore all farking weekend that  didn't immediately sell out in every size and color.  Dammit, I wanted to get my wife those purple gloves!)
