The inquest heard that trains travelled quietly through residential areas at night.

many town are asking trains to stop blowing warning horns in city limits.  guess they'd rather have a good night sleep

Last year, the yuppies won out and got their demand for taxpayer-funded crossing modifications satisfied, to get a quiet zone in this town. It just went into effect this week. I predict a pedestrian fatality within three years.

The punch line is that, 40 years ago, there were many, many more freight trains rolling through at all hours of the day and night, along with the commuter trains. But, back then, this was still a farm town. Once I got used to it, I hardly noticed anymore. People are wimps today.

I have train tracks about a half mile from my house and almost a dozen trains go by every night. Some will minimize the horn blowing, just giving a quick toot at street crossings. Others think it's their sole purpose in life to inconvenience as many people as possible, laying on the horn for miles at a time without letting up.

Do their trains use rubber wheels? How quiet could it be? Even electric trains are pretty noisy. Obviously not engine noise but just the wheels against the track can make quite a bit of noise.

Sounds like a self-correcting problem for vanadlism. I can accept that some grafitti can be art, but personal tags on private property doesn't cut it for me.

April is the cruelest month. Cruelest month.

Wait...graffiti artist, or beat poet?

Maybe he was a hearing impaired tagger who was in an area off limits to the public, and doing something illegal...

I might feel more strongly about it if the railroads near me gave half a shiat. But they don't. Equipment still works the same, and enforcement /cleanup costs money.

Now that they weld the tracks end-to-end rather than bolting them together, trains are more likely to sneak up on you.

/Sometimes walk the rails.

Ontre was his tag name? Was he any good?

He was destroying property and got killed during the act. If they did enough damage to add up to a felony it should be felony murder rap for his friends tagging with him.

Dirt Bags.

Sometimes, train graffiti is the only thing that keeps me from ramming headlong into the side of the train as it passes. The swatches of color affixed along the side of the rail cars is fresh and soothing, adding warmth and beauty where once there was only an industrialized cold. The kind of cold that eats at your soul, leaving the taste of a handful of pennies in your mouth. Only after the flashes of blue and green and red and yellow start to flood my ocular senses do I realize that I've been biting my tongue, in an attempt to keep from screaming at the top of my lungs. The pennies I'd tasted? The coppery taste of my own blood, flowing from the self inflicted wound. After glancing at the car next to me, a man in his mid-40's also waiting for the train to pass, it becomes apparent that I'm not the only one with an eye for train art. We exchange a knowing knod, blood flowing from his mouth as it is from mine.

I was wondering the same thing. My only thought is he had his iPod on which cut out the background noise.

FRA Train Horn Rule

"Under the Train Horn Rule (49 CFR Part 222), locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds, in advance of all public grade crossings. "

2013-01-23 09:31:05 AM
Left out the best part:

"Train horns must be sounded in a standardized pattern of 2 long, 1 short and 1 long blasts. The pattern must be repeated or prolonged until the lead locomotive or lead cab car occupies the grade crossing. "
