Looks like the driver was pulling the ol' "don't put it in gear and take your foot off the break while dicking around and not paying attention" routine.

Interesting. I wonder how the insurance sorts it out.

Two separate accidents.  Lead car gets all the fault for first one.  Unfortunately, though not deliberate or driver caused, the truck gets the fault for the door.

Hopefully they'll rule that he only got hit because he tried to cause the first accident. Chain of causation or some legal term I'm not too familiar with.

Not necessarily. Depending on where this took place, opening your door into traffic puts you at fault. I've done it :(

I understand why so many Russians have dash cams, but don't other Russians know that their fellow citizens have dash cams?

They need to come up with a dashcam jammer. Then a device that jams the dashcam jammer.

I'm still curious as to what the passenger thought was going to happen when he or she was going to step into a busy lane of traffic.

The visibility of the reversing lights is proof of intent.

Maybe they could write a GUI interface using Visual Basic to track its IP address.

Haha, wanted to make a "The Big Hit" reference, but I'm glad someone else was on it.

It looks like his breaks lights were on the whole time, like he was trying to break but sliding backward on ice.

The Bear: It looks like his breaks lights were on the whole time, like he was trying to break but sliding backward on ice.

If you gently put your foot on the brake it will activate the lights, but it won't slow you down or apply any braking action. Generally, it's around the same pressure to deactivate cruise control. Then you just roll back in neutral while all the witnesses think you're stopped and would swear to seeing your brake lights on 100% of the time.

My question is, with this being an insurance scam. What are they expecting in damages? Hell, I've had people hit me at 5 mph and it left no marks. I can't imagine a slight bump is going to get you anything.

I'd guess either "ow my neck" or a shakedown for some quick cash.

Now the would-be scammer has to ask the would-be mark to e-mail the video
to his insurance company for the door damage caused by the truck.

It's your responsibility to make sure it's clear before opening a car door.

Door prize is not the fault of the truck driver.

My understanding from news reports of people here in Canada being busted for doing this, is it isn't so much the insurance money, as it is one of two scams;

1) "You rear-ended me! Give me $300 cash and we'll call it even"
2) "Owww, me and my 6 passenger's necks!!" (this is usually done in conjunction with a shady massage/chiropractic business, which milks the insurance/health company for cash, and gives the car participants a share)
