I've been to the top of the Palace of Culture in Warsaw. It's impressive in its ugliness. Great view of the city, though.

I wish they still made buildings like that.

I always thought The Motherland Calls was a much greater feat of art and engineering than the Statue of Liberty. Oddly, most people have never even heard of it.

Do we really need these threads every month? Where's the "unbelievable beautiful architecture in out-of-the-way-country X" thread?

I've never really enjoyed the massive look of Government Architecture, particularly of the Soviet and Nazi regimes, because it feels very reminiscent from the Baroque, in the sense that it was made to show you who was in charge.

But, I also have a morbid fascination with them, because those projects have very interesting stories behind their design.

Funny fact about the Warsaw Tower. At the base of the "knowledge" side is a statue holding a book authored by the leaders of the Communist movement: Marx, Lenin, and an odd blank space a different color than the rest of the stone.

They had cemented over Stalin's name after he died.

They would not be able to make a building that's big enough to fit Stalin's ego, anyway.

/Communism been recruiting the young, dumb and the ignorant since 1848.

Thats a pretty bad ass building.

Its been a long time since we made something just because it would be awesome, and not for profit.

I think they modeled the Palace of the Soviets on Pandemonium, Lucifer's capital city in Milton's Paradise Lost.

Talk about your high kitsch! It's even got King Kong about to be attacked by the Soviet Air Force.

Zigars? Ziggurats?
Anon, out of the earth, a fabrick huge
Rose... where pilasters round
were set, and Dorick pillars overlaid
With golden architrave, nor did there want
Cornice or freeze, with bossy sculptures graven:
The roof was fretted gold. Not Babylon
Nor great Alcairo, such magnificence
Equalled in all their glories...
