The Silverdome is in Pontiac.

I wanted to sing THE ROOF THE ROOF THE ROOF IS ON FIRE. But it is not. Last night, George Noory's guest on Coast to Coast was the author of the book "Not by fire, but by ice" that argues that we face another ice age, not global warming. Coincidence?

Kind of like the Great Western Forum, except they're actually going to repair it. I'm not sure how the Forum passes building inspection, but they still hold concerts there.

Ghost Towns, the both of them. Been down US-95 between Reno and Las Vegas a few times, and seen ghost towns. People abandon the town and Mother Nature blends it in like a dinosaur's skeleton.

Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant

One of the most legendary events to occur in the Silverdome.

2013-01-23 03:27:45 AM
Local traffic copters have captured video of the Silverdome today, the roof torn to shreds. Strong winds and snow in the last few days have ripped the inflatable dome apart, and no one's done anything to stop it. That's by design. After discovering a small tear in one of the panels, the building's owners chose to deflate and abandon it rather than repair it. There was no sense in spending money to fix it, since they plan to replace it this summer with a hard covering.
They did this on purpose and will replace it. What's the sad part?

I saw Springsteen there back in 1984, still the best concert I've ever been to.

Hey, that's the place where I bodyslammed the 900-pound Andre the Giant and tore every muscle in my back doing it BROTHER...I wasn't sure if he'd go up for the move or not, but thankfully he decided I was worthy of taking over the business DUDE.

I'm surprised anyone bought it. How much could it realistically bring in? What are maintenance, utilities, insurance, and taxes on that thing. And how does a building cope with no roof and no heating for six months?

$50 says the roof never gets replaced.

I'd be interested in seeing what the taxes are at least.

County: "So, that'll be $840,000 this year for property taxes"

New Owner "WTF? Taxes are 159%!!??!!! *I didnt actually do the math so shut up*

County: "Well, no, we have the assessed value of $33 million"

New Owner: "Ummmm I just paid $550k for it in a public auction and I probably overbid"

County: "Well we use a different means of evaluating...."

For $50, you could buy the whole damn stadium!

True, but Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat was more impressive.

If the housing market picks up in the next few years, they'll tear it down and build condos.

Owner: ZOMG! WE'RE JOB CREATORS! Ultimate Frisbee will bring at least $1 Trillion into the local economy. Also, here's $100K for your re-election fund.

County: OK Nevermind, how about free taxes for 20 years and we'll pay to have the roof fixed.

Glad this was covered.  The fact that it's in Pontiac was a big reason they built a new stadium in Detroit.  Nobody wanted to drive all the way the fark out to Pontiac to go watch the Lions lose.

Apparently it's much more convenient to drive downtown and watch them lose.

Casino! Seriously, that's one of the ideas they've floated for the building. Or just bury Barry Sanders there when he dies, and fill it in.

I love Steamboat's story about that event. Apparently at the WM after-party, people were continuously coming up to him and Savage and telling them what an awesome match it was. Steamer said he looked over at Hogan, and not too many people were congratulating him. He knew at that point there was bound to be trouble.

Steamboat's loss of the IC title to Honky Tonk Man for asking for some time off to see his son born proved Steamboat was right.

Steamboat vs. Savage may have been a better wrestling match, but 70,000 people (or whatever the actual attendance really was) didn't pay to see that match

It was sold on the strength of Hogan/Andre and what they were calling "Roddy Piper's Retirement (ha!) Match"

Hogan and Andre was, without a doubt, the cake.

But Steamboat/Savage was the sweet, sweet icing that makes the bland, dry, shiatty cake taste like an ice cream and handjob smoothie.

My parents live a few blocks from Detroit and they can't let their cat outdoors anymore. Why you ask? Because coyotes in Detroit have been attacking neighborhood animals in the area. Detroit has a coyote problem. Farking ridiculous. Last time I visited them I almost killed a pheasant in the road a few blocks from their home. Detroit is being retaken by the elements.

There are similar problems in Chicago. There are coyote, fox, deer...all within city limits and all cause problems. Is Chicago being reclaimed?

Detroit has vast tracts of land that are completely empty. It's a city designed for 2 million people that currently houses ~600,000. Look at google maps - you can see the outline of the city based on the amount of greenspace versus the suburbs. Is Chicago thinking about urban farming initiatives to deal with the abundance of empty blocks? There are whole neighborhoods that are ghost towns with no more than a house or two per block. There is a reason the History Channel filmed footage for their Life After People special in the city limits.

"With 60 of its 137 square miles already abandoned, Detroit is a prime example of what can happen to a city when it is devoid of man. See what happens to a city after 40 years in this life after people video"

I know all if this. I grew up just outside of Detroit. I lived there for over 20 years. In fact, I wish Detroit would approve some of the urban farming initiatives instead of being hard to work with.

However, Hogan/Andre was the spectacle that drew the crowd, made the card.

Well, they deflated it back on Jan. 4, so you wouldn't have seen anything from the road.  Except maybe flying pieces of roof crossing Opdyke.
