It is not the first time Aso, one of Japan's wealthiest politicians, has questioned the state's duty towards its large elderly population.

He should come to the US. He'd fit right in with the current GOP.

2013-01-23 12:32:02 AM
Yeah, but isn't the median age for death in Japan somewhere around 107?

Around here, 72's not that old.  I think 70 is the age that Japanese men hit the point of "hell yeah, I'm gonna stop giving a shiat and say whatever I goddamn please.  Also, I'm gonna use the hell out of my hazard lights.  Just pull around me, motherfarkers."

Japanese women get to start at age 60.

IIRC, something like 5% of Japan's population is under the age of 18 and like 30% is over 65, so yeah, he ain't that old there.  I can't remember the exact numbers from this summer.

"Old" is "15 years more than your current age"

So in his view, anyone over 87 should go to that creepy suicide forest and never come back

No, the current GOP says we should protect the government benefits we provide to the current and soon-to-become elderly and shove giant rods up the anuses of the people who will become elderly in more than ten years.

"Heaven forbid if you are forced to live on when you want to die. I would wake up feeling increasingly bad knowing that [treatment] was all being paid for by the government," he said during a meeting of the national council on social security reforms.

Funny, since his family owns a big hospital in Iizuka which gets by nicely giving treatment paid for by the government.

Lost me there. That one really wouldn't crack my top ten.

I would wake up and feel bad because I WAS FREAKING DYING AND IN PAIN.

Maybe just me there.

He had already angered the country's doctors by telling them they lacked common sense, made a joke about Alzheimer's patients, and pronounced "penniless young men" unfit for marriage.

In 2001, he said he wanted Japan to become the kind of successful country in which "the richest Jews would want to live".

Oh FFS, did I just get trolled by a 72 yo finance minister from Japan?

I'll be honest here. Did not see that one coming.

You know, for literally decades the debate about the elderly has amused me to no end. This yamsack gets a pass on my comment because he is elderly himself so he if the exception. But I love to hear what are mostly young people constantly biatch and moan about how the old people are a drain on society, they're useless, etc. What's so hilarious about them saying it (and I have noticed it's mostly those in their 20's) is how quickly they forget that it was these old worthless people that not long ago provided EVERYTHING to the people who are now complaining about them. Hey there mister hipster douchebag, when you were ten, you were pretty much a useless waste yourself. You didn't do anything productive for the country, just ate and consumed precious resources. Perhaps the best thing to do to fix everything is to eliminate anyone below the age of 19 and above the age of 40. Then the only people left will be the "productive" people who deserve to live.

But the truly funny part about the young complaining about the old is that very soon that young person who hated old people is starting to look a little grey around the temples, their skin is starting to show signs of aging. Gasp, they are now wearing reading glasses and going to the doctor because things are starting to hurt. And before they realize it they have become the very people they hate so much. But wait, now that it is them who is the older generation all of a sudden Social Security is important, respect for elders is expected.

See, it's amusing because you can't complain about old people without eventually becoming a hypocrite. It's always someone else's problem until it becomes your own. I really get bored of hearing twenty something douches complain about the elderly, when these are the very people that supported and raised them so they can have a good life. The elderly should be respected and cared for. Set the standard now and make it a good one, for not too far into the future it might be the very standard you set that you will have to live under.

We're going to have to go down the same path at some point. The younger population will be too small to support the older population.

Of course, if you got rid of Social Security/Medicare people would have more kids in response and the problem would begin to correct itself, but you'd also screw all the extant old people out of their benefits.

I agree with that. What my grandparents went through before they finally (if you are suffering then it is "finally") died, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies.
Makes me wonder what kinda laws Japan has on assisted suicide. Also, if you have no more mental prowess, what your kids can decide for you or if they need some kinda power of attorney.

you guys understand that it's not more of "I want mine," but the sheer economics of us (which are a great deal smaller in size than the Boomer generation) having to pay for the safety nets that we hope to enjoy but are running the risk of going bankrupt from the boomers (since you would have more going out than coming in)

coupled with the fact that the older you are, normally the more likely you'll get the job if it's a tossup between you and a younger brat.

Face it, being in your 50s+ has perks in our society, far more than when our grandparents were in their 50s+.

The Boomers don't tend to retire at 65, so the don't get taken out of the workforce which means that there's less opportunity for us to get into it.

Generations are getting smaller, our kids are going to be just as pissy with us still living as we are with you lot still living

When I say the boomers are farking up shiat. I'm saying it because they are refusing to even consider suggestions that might hurt them a little bit, like using the chained CPI instead of the regular CPI in all government calculations. Did you know that the libby lib libbersons at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities think that chained CPI is a good proposal (as long as it's paired with a SS benefit boost to those with the lowest incomes)? Yet talk to the AARP, and their response to the chained CPI is "OMG KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!1!1!" And forget even mild revenue increases on the upper-middle class and higher to pay for things like education and early childhood development programs.

Old people tend to be one the Republican's (or pretty much any political party that paints themselves as "conservative") biggest voting blocs with all that "pining for the good old days" mentality that the old folks have. Yet the less-advantaged ones get screwed with inadequate pensions and horrific nursing homes. The chickens can always be counted on to vote for Col Sanders.

Near the end, so much of the "life extending treatments" are just barbaric. Keeping people hooked up to feeding tubes, breathing machines, and whatever else just to extend their life by a few weeks. All the while their body is just exhausting itself, fighting against the breathing machine, wanting to move but being unable because the machines require them to be strapped down, so drugged up there is barely anything resembling them left in their mind. And all the while they're using up tons of medical resources because their family is holding out for a miracle or something. No Thanks.

Which is why we need to fix entitlements now. An adjustment is necessary to fix for the decreasing worker/retiree ratio. but discuss raising the age an extra year or two or reducing cola to a more accurate rate and you get left wingers whining that we're abandoning the elderly (even those same elderly are the ones who paid in too little in their working careers to pay for the benefits they now expect).
