This happened to a woman in Baltimore who was a transplant Pats fan - she tweeted something back a couple of months ago when he died - and she was fired from her job.

Torrey Smith's dead brother approves of sweeping gun control reforms and punitive measures for flipping the bird at Arlington National Cemetary.

Even in her "apology" tweets, she is the victim:

•"In the heat of me being upset about NE, I made a horrible joke about Smith's bro and became the most hated person on the web."

•"I apologized and meant it...I just can't control if people think I'm really sorry."

•"Well, I'm currently getting death threats and people posting my home address."

•"I feel like Cady from 'Mean Girls' when she walks into the gymnasium and she knows everyone there is staring and hates her."

•"Cyber Bullying is a new hobby, I guess. :)"

I sincerely hope you're referring to the smattering of low IQ Twitter denizens who have crawled out of their holes to act like ugly bullies. Because that same smattering does not represent the entirety of the population of New England, nor is it even representative of the Patriots fanbase.

This is why I hate Twitter: for every 1 interesting feed, there are probably over a hundred that are nothing more than low IQ, high opinion asshats looking for a mouthpiece.

I got a twitter account so I could read Ochocinco's tweets while he was in the NFL; checked it maybe twice before not bothering any more. I have tweeted once, to one person: I asked Ryan Ludwick why, when he played for the Cardinals, his walk-up music was "Brass Monkey" by the Beastie Boys. He never responded.

Twitter is dead to me, and it irks me that it's frequently used to generate content for the MSM.

What I have to wonder is why Torrey Smith?

Smith burned the Broncos, Boldin burned the Pats.
Smith didn't trash talk after the game, that was Suggs.
Smith isn't public enemy #1 in New England, that's Pollard.
Smith didn't call their offense a gimmick, that was Ayanbadejo
Smith wasn't the one who caught the interceptions, that was Graham
Smith isn't the one getting all of the media attention, that's Lewis and Harbaugh.

Did they just spin "the wheel of Ravens" and land on Torrey Smith?
"Hey Torrey, nothing personal. It just happened to land on you instead of Matt Birk this time".

You act like its exclusive to pats fans, all sports fans are assholes and tweets like this are normally made when someone is drunk or impaired.

Didn't care much that the falcons lost, the people shiatting on my twitter account were more pissed I didn't respond about the loss I think. "Oh he's not a real fan......" Nah my allegiances just lie elsewhere, I was more pissed at people shiatting on twitter after the UGA loss, the gf pulled me out of a bar because GT fans were trying to start shiat. Emotions run high for sports teams, don't act like its exclusive to one fan base, usually most douches are the ones who are bandwagon jumpers.

They and their fans are the biggest douchebags ever--based solely on my experience working with a Pats fan during Super Bowl XXXI era.

Would've been ray rice but fantasy season is over.

Yeah people on twitter generally suck. I had to do daily twitter posts in French for my intermediate classes, and promptly stopped using it. Somehow I had 60 followers by the end, despite never saying anything substantial. It's a weird place.

2013-01-22 10:46:28 PM

fickenchucker: They and their fans are the biggest douchebags ever--based solely on my experience working with a Pats fan during Super Bowl XXXI era.

Not in my experience. I'm a Ravens fan. I was at Foxboro wearing my Ray Rice jersey for the Texans game and the Baltimore game. Tailgating before the Texans game I got a few chants from strangers of "Bil-ly Cun-dif!" which I responded "E-li Man-ning!" And then we all laughed and drank beer together. In the game, not a thing. Essentially the same thing this past weekend with more harmless verbal taunts. After the game people said the Patriots were outplayed. One person threw an empty plastic beer bottle in the crowd at me but was quickly told by others to settle down, and "not cool, bro" or other stuff like that.

So you base it on one fan you worked with, I based it on a stadium and parking lot full of them while wearing a hated opponent's jersey during the AFC championship game. I will concede, though, that while they are friendly, they are condescending arrogant dick-bags before the game. After? Pretty quiet about it. And to hear them talk, they watched a different game.

Guy: "Yeah dude, the Pats woulda kicked their ass if Talib didn't get hurt."
Me: "How? He doesn't play offense. You still didn't score any points in the second half."
Guy: "Yeah.. you know what I'm sayin!"

Of course, a good defense gets off the field quickly and gives the offense more and better chances, instead of spending five or six minutes of clock time getting driven backwards down the field. Which was the Pats' Achilles heel all year.

WinoRhino: So you base it on one fan you worked with,

Yes. Yes, I do.

If you met the guy you would agree. His level of douchbaggery far outweighed the stadium full of normalcy you encountered. When he left most everyone sighed with relief.

/Obviously I'm exaggerating. Everyone knows the biggest dick fans are from Philly--who throws batteries?

Agreed! Or snowballs at Santa!

I understand your point, but in the second half, Patriots had the ball 6 times. Punted at the Ravens' 34 when Welker dropped the 3rd down pass. Then a 3-and-out due to an offensive holding penalty. Ridley fumbles on the NE 47. Next was an out on downs. Then interception at the Baltimore 18. Lastly, an interception thrown in the end zone. Sounds like they were doing okay on the opportunities and field position, they just couldn't execute.

Sorry but Pats fans aren't worse than most other fanbases on the internet. For some reason a lot of people think that being obnoxious makes them better fans and that includes fans of all teams. If you have a team that's won recently or is a contender then of course it will be amped up a little bit because said douchebag fan will be a lot mouthier if the source of his self-esteem is in a successful phase. Notice we rarely see Bills fans being assholes.

It doesn't even have to be on the Internet. I vaguely remember Steve Kerr getting taunted during an Arizona Wildcats game after his dad was murdered. He was so upset, he had to come out of the game. I don't remember who the opposing team was, but I lost a little faith in humanity that day.

So yeah, people who feel protected, either by a mob or internet anonymity, can really degrade into the worst kind of excrement.

On a case by case basis, most fans are fine. It's anonymity and mass numbers that tend to turn people into total arseclowns.

Jordan making mocking reference to it in practice is why he and Kerr once got into a fistfight.

Ah, yes, that sounds familiar. And nauseating. Made me want to look it up. I guess it happened during warmups, not the game.

"Kerr said: "It happened long enough before the game that I was able to regain my composure. There's no question they made me play my best. There's no question it got my whole team fired up.""
