Your house shouldn't freeze THAT quickly. If it does, you're probably paying a fortune to heat it and you should invest in insulation. Put on a sweater.

Throw on an extra blanket when you go to bed and shut up. People go without power for more than 4 hours quite often in the winter when snowstorms bring down power line deal with it.

The schools are probably reliant on the same switch. I would guess they are doing this at nights specifically so people can go to work and school the next day.

it's 4 hours, so people who live in tin shacks are gonna get cold. people with poorly insulated houses might want to wear something warm to bed, or at least throw on another blanket. the worst that could happen? someone will wear an ugly sweater. at least they won't have to wear it outside.

They ignore the problem and end up with a much longer, unplanned outage.

In my house, the daytime setpoint is 68F and the nighttime setpoint is 60F during cold months. Temperature switches automatically at 11PM and 6:45AM with my fancypants Honeywell thermostat.

I wake up at 6:45 and the temperature usually is 62 or thereabouts with an outside temperature of 20F. Temperature equilibrium is logarithmic- that is, the closer the inside gets to the outside temperature, the longer it is going to take for the temperature to drop another 1degree. If your house gets dangerously cold in less than 24 hours there is probably nothing between the walls and the windows are open.

Residents are advised to bring charcoal grills inside and light them to generate heat. Be sure to close all outside windows and doors tightly to maintain warmth.

About two weeks ago some guy wacked into a distribution box and blew out power for about 2hrs. They scheduled a 5hr outage for that night @8 to replace the burnt out box for a permanent fix. Power was out for just over 3hrs.

Plus, who knows, if they leave the temp fix in it may cause bigger problems taking longer to fix.

Crank all heat sources to 11 until outage goes into effect.

This will make some people just crank up the heat prior to the outage causing the sytem to be overloaded and go down early.

50,000 BTU/hr wall furnace. $594 at Home Depot. Put one of these in the house, and you won't be cold when the power goes out.

/Not recommended for primary heating in very cold climates, but good for a backup
