As for the rest of the list, it pretty much sucks. Gonzo, Sweetums, Swedish Chef, they aren't "terrifying". Hell, Sweetums is one of my faves. When he showed up on The Muppets, I knew the movie was going to turn out OK... He and Beaker are two sides of the same coin. He's big and a little timid. Beaker is small and quite brave.

I'm a computer tech for a school district. A lot of times after lengthy breaks, we'll get calls about sound not working on the PCs (due to janitors disconnecting and moving everything so they can clean carpets etc). I'll go to the classroom, fire up the Yip Yip video on Youtube and let it run as I reconnect everything. That way I don't have to constantly go back to the PC and play a wav file to see if the sound is working. Every single time the kids will quiet down and watch the vid on the projector screen. I have never heard any kid claim they were scared.

Me thinks this author is a bit of a Nancy Boy.

/Kermit's "Rainbow Connection" video is another one I use.

The yip yips, janice, beaker(not Dr bunsen), gonzo and sweetums are among my favorites. I like to bug my kids by doing a yip yip impersonation. I liked Janice because being born in the 1970's I saw several women that looked like that. She was part of a band and she was the one picked for this list. Animal's first appearance was by far creepier.

HotWingAgenda: Fano: Crazy Harry wasn't a muppet? Or did my using a quote from the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight confuse you?

My bad... there was a depressingly bad standup ventriloquist comedian a while back, that had a terrorist puppet.

AH! Achmed The Dead Terrorist, from.. fark I cannot remember his name. Dunham, I think.

To be fair, your confusion is understandable; They stopped using Crazy Harry much decades ago. (I think the last time I saw him show up was a brief cameo in Muppet Treasure Island?)

Crazy Harry was in the most recent Muppet movie.

hubiestubert: Uncle Deadly freaked me out a bit as a kid, but that was the point. A variety show with stuff for adults AND kids. Much like the Animaniacs realized later on. You have stuff for BOTH audiences. That's how you hook folks. And entertain families.

Our Dear Author is a Sally...

You might want to look up Rocky and Bullwinkle. There were doing it way before. Also Looney Tunes. Back in the day they were written for both to enjoy.

That's not a muppet.

I can understand why some of those B-list muppets on the list were creepy. There's a reason why they weren't A-listers, after all. But I have the yip-yips as the ringtone on my cellular telephoooooooone and it's frickin' awesome.

Elmo should've been on the list, though. He creeps me the fark out, and he stole Grover's spotlight. And I used to be mildly disturbed by the muppets that danced around in music segments by taking their heads off and passing them around like basketballs.

I love this one. Great movie to boot.

saturn badger: I love this one. Great movie to boot.

For some reason, the Fireys (those original, more adult muppets) are the only versions that seem to exist in the historical record now. But a few years after Labyrinth, Henson made some more neon cute and furry versions specifically for musical interludes on Sesame Street. I know they were real, because 4 year-olds don't have LSD flashbacks.

Anyway, that scene in the movie came on and it fit the song "All Alone" that was being played at the time. Blew my farking mind man!

Weak article is weak. I never got the slightest hint of Squeaky Fromme from Janice.

2013-01-23 08:30:42 AM

Spatula Porn: So, it is confirmed that "Janice" is in fact a female muppet. I never quite understood what the hell that was supposed to be.

For some reason, as a kid, I always assumed she was male. Don't know why. It was only in re-watching the Muppet Movie as a teen that it hit me she was supposed to be female.

tailormadebassist: THIS freaked me out when I was a kid and still kinda does to this day (36 now). I love African rhythms and the music in general, but the masks always scared me.

"Turn the World Around?" yeah, that was a bit creepy. The Muppet Show got canceled when I was really young, but it went into syndication. It was on at 7:00AM on Saturdays, so I used to get up and watch it by myself (I was a huge Muppets fan). Some of those things really weirded me out because I watching them alone.

Oh my... yes.  I remember getting chills as a kid hearing the trolly bell and then it would disappear into the wall to the other land.  Scared the hell out of me.  She was absolutely the creepiest.

My kids watched Dragon Tales and I got the same chills when Max and Emme would go to Dragon land.  Maybe there is a deeper issue here...

I showed the Yip Yips to my kids when they were two. They thought they were great. That's right idiot blogger, you're easier to scare than a two year old.

What, no "muhnah muhnah" aliens? Oh, they're all cute and goofy while they're singing "do doo do doo do," but try a little bebop scat improv and they're all "stunned look of disapproval" and you lose your groove and well, you just gotta go with "muhnah muhnah" all over again. And then you try again, and it's the same damn look. You give and you give, but nothing is good enough for those pink felt demons. DAMMIT MOM! WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO MAKE YOU LOVE ME???

Shenanigans!: ninotchka: The Big Bad Wolf and the bear muppets used to terrify me as a kid

Ooh yes! The Big Bad Wolf! Now that was scary.

But Swedish Chef because of his human hands? Come on. Then you'd also have to count Ernie, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, and all the other Muppets with people hands. I don't buy it.

The other Muppets hands are inside gloves/mitts. That makes all the difference.

Pretty sure none of the ones on that list cast a whole world into darkness and committed genocide, but not regular kill them all slaughter; more drain their life to extend their own vitality.
