I'm bored of this story already. I need something new to become outraged about. Somebody do something awful. Shoot a bunch of kids or something.

oh my god those things are so un farking believably stupid

let me just cherry pick a particular wordy voice from a song that I like, and the chorus of a song that I don't like, and then make picture of words dot text

far enough.

TommyymmoT: It was too cold to sing well. Your vocal chords tighten up, and trying to reach some of those notes at that temperature, had the potential to damage her voice.

Many professional singers I know, won't even drink anything cold before they sing, and some even gargle warm water.

don't try to explain. you're ruining a National Scandal hopeful for the Republicans. (its all they've got now)

Linux_Yes: lip sync or not, she still sang it.

Yes, she did. She sang it, perhaps several times, at a recording studio earlier and not in front of a million people live. Quite an accomplishment to be proud of, to be sure. One I would tell my grandchildren about.

"Guess what MeeMaw did at the 2nd Obama Presidential Inauguration?! That's right! I mouthed words soundlessly!"

2013-01-22 05:33:54 PM
I can't get into a twist about Beyonce lip-syncing at the inaugural because it's not a big shock. She is just another made-up, oversaturated singer who uses videos and studio tricks to hide her lack of vocal talent.

In short: Beyonce is just a big butt and a smile.

Seriously. This notion that shallow popular music is somehow more prolific now than in decades past is absolutely moronic.

2013-01-22 05:40:51 PM

Kibbler: Honest question. Is there anybody here who would call themselves a fan of her music? To each his own, de gustibus non est disputandum, etc. But I genuinely can't understand an adult listening to her.

I'm not a fan, but I don't mind her. She oversings too much for my taste (Whitney Houston misunderstood the lesson of Aretha Franklin, and female R&B vocalists keep repeating the error), and I don't care at all for the recording style she and her producers prefer - it's sterile, to my ears. On the other hand, she has a decent set of pipes on her and there are a couple of her songs that I like. Goodness knows I've heard a lot worse, and for that matter, I listened to worse in my youth.

2013-01-22 05:42:39 PM

oldfarthenry: I have a sad confession to make - half of my flatulence in the office is pre-recorded.
I make the motions and subtlety hit the play button on my computer - then I wave some rotten cheese around to simulate the flatus stench.

I'm sorry and apologize.

wow. and i really respected what you do, man. just...wow.

Of course Beyonce lip synched, If she sang live, it might just possibly reveal she can't sing at all.

That's absurd. As I said, I find her style histrionic, even vulgar, but no one can realistically deny that she has technical skill.

You know, normally I'd agree with that sentiment, but in this case, she's doing a cover. And she's got a great voice for it. Even if it was recorded. Makes me want to get the track. Doesn't matter to me otherwise. I know how the industry works.

/didn't read the article, assuming it was playback and not real singing

Soup4Bonnie: Surool: So, in your reality people only went to the inauguration to hear Beyonce perform?

Surool: So, had Beyonce not been there, nobody would have attended

You keep putting the same words in my mouth. Your absolutes are dishonest. I never said "nobody would have attended". I have said some were probably only there to see a celebrity trick them into thinking she had just performed a great piece when it was actually pre-recorded in a studio.

But keep on going with No Beyonce, No Inauguration as if I had said that. After the third time, maybe someone can draw a Venn diagram for you.

Anyone who would go to all the trouble and expense of attending a presidential inauguration and b*tch about a singer who was there is a complete tool.

Why bother to pre record a performance when can be a critic on Fark?

You owe me a new keyboard, seriously.

I know I'm not supposed to celebrate bad behavior, but is there a man in this room that doesn't secretly wish he was Bill Clinton? I mean, you have rock stars, athletes, and actors, but this man was the farking president for eight years and retains the title for life. Hell, I'm straight and I'd probably fark him.

I imagine his pick-up lines are something like, "Hi! I'm Bill Clinton. Do me a favor and hike that skirt up and bend over the desk."

 "Ok!"

she wasn't lip synching. the band was. because the cold temps affect their instruments. she sang with the backing track

If you look at her tongue movements in the HD broadcast, I'd be incredibly surprised if there's an ounce of truth in this. It's just too perfect.

A back up? Of course. Pre-recorded music? Possibly. Her prerecorded? I very much doubt.

Lionel Mandrake: "We pre-recorded all music as a matter of course and have done since time immemorial," she said.

It's true.  I heard George Washington had a mixtape made just in case the fife and drum corps didn't show up.

Well, techically it only has to have been done since July 6 1189 to have been done since time immemorial.

2013-01-22 08:14:32 PM

Dr Dreidel: I feel like Beyonce is trying to be Oprah - voice of a generation, role model for (young|black|women) people, moral arbiter, media icon. Tyra Banks was also (post-modeling career) trying to be Oprah.

We get it. They're black. And female.

bradkanus: it's less about the President and more about her and her image.  I don't like the President, but this really has nothing to do with him.

Agree. Not an Obama fan but this is an issue on as far as a singer is concerned.

She fears her natural voice in front of amillion people....an entertainer, not a singer.

rnld: Dr Dreidel: rnld: PawisBetlog: trey101: woman is about as deep as a puddle.... "who run the world?"

Brutal.

We need to bring back songs like do wah diddy or da do do do, da dah dah dah dah.

That song is actually surprisingly deep:

Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for their submission
And no one's jamming their transmission
'Cos when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

// compared to "who run the world? girls" - not much subtlety in that, is there?

Unless you get the reality of who run the world.

Fat bottomed girls make the world go round.

Once you get past the headlines, all the articles I've read say that the Marine Band's recording of the anthem was pre-recorded and played. I didn't get the impression that Beyonce's singing was pre-recorded, too. Shoot, I can usually spot lip-syncs, and if she did, she's the best lip-syncer that I've seen.

/looked real to me.

That's a good pic, so long as it's only used to show how ridiculous it is that people like Beyonce are considered artists. I have a serious problem with it when it's some old bastard trying to imply that there's no good musicians/lyricists out there today. They're out there, just being broadcasted by Clear Channel. There's also the added bonus that most of the completely stupid shiat from decades ago has disappeared into the garbage bin of history.

Mikey1969: Soup4Bonnie: Well, she's an artist. You can't expect her to just perform when scheduled.

It's standard for everyone in live situations like this, period. It's not a "pampered artist" thing, its a business thing. In something this big, a screwup is a LOT of money and embarrassment. Hell, they even lip sync on SNL, and that's nowhere the size of a Presidential Inauguration.

And that's a damn shame. For a lot of styles of music it's expected for people to make mistakes and improvise while performing. It's a shame that pop music has gotten to the point that some people find it a turnoff if the performer even seems tired by the end of the night, and criticisms get even more harsh when they make [gasp] a mistake. I always felt it was just the way it was when they've given it their all for the last 75-90 minutes. I'll take the mistakes and the exhaustion. That's part of what makes it real for me.

If she didn't really sing at the time she was presented as "singing," then we would have done just as well to have a life-size cardboard cutout of Beyonce standing there at the podium. In other words, young lady, you do NOT get to schmooze and mingle and party with the powerful if you're not going to actually work for it, i.e., sing the song.

Alternatively, they could have brought in Susan Boyle: "And now, ladies and gentlemen, Susan Boyle, passionately lip-synching Beyonce's rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'"

Singing in cold air is brutally difficult, particularly when you have to sing over a broad range. Prerecording and then deciding what to do on the day makes perfect sense.

2013-01-23 08:16:48 AM
No biggie. In 2009, Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianist Gabriela Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill performed a John Williams work which was pre-recorded, due to the cold temperatures. Those hacks....it's about the weather and acoustics of the instruments involved. Although Beyonce has pale talent in comparison, it's the only move that makes sense concerning the event and the conditions.

I hear Ellen Degeners wasn't really talking in real time to the audience as well.....

2013-01-23 08:29:06 AM
What is it with pop stars and their lip synching anyway? What's so difficult about doing it for real?

2013-01-23 08:35:12 AM
IIRC, U2 played for real and they're old Irish dudes from England.

2013-01-23 09:10:19 AM
Even if it were warm out, she would still need to pre-record it so all her wrong notes can be digitally adjusted to be in tune. She's a fraud, a dolled-up fat chick who's almost as over-rated as her husband. You know Obama secretly thinks they both suck as musicians.

2013-01-23 10:15:08 AM

Kibbler: Honest question. Is there anybody here who would call themselves a fan of her music? To each his own, de gustibus non est disputandum, etc. But I genuinely can't understand an adult listening to her.
