I feel like Beyonce is trying to be Oprah - voice of a generation, role model for (young|black|women) people, moral arbiter, media icon. Tyra Banks was also (post-modeling career) trying to be Oprah.

Not only will Beyonce never be Oprah, she'll never even get to the Oprah level that Tyra did (I'd say Tyra barely merits a "Stedman fart" on the scale of "1-Oprah").

As I understand it, they have every artist pre record so that if the sound system gets farked up, it doesn't cut out on National TV. IIRC, the sound they play at the event itself is still the real deal. They did the same thing with Yo Yo Ma last time around, there was some stupid outrage article in the tabloids over that too.

It's standard for everyone in live situations like this, period. It's not a "pampered artist" thing, its a business thing. In something this big, a screwup is a LOT of money and embarrassment. Hell, they even lip sync on SNL, and that's nowhere the size of a Presidential Inauguration.
