Cythraul: Why China no like time zones? Why?!

I learned something today.

A country like China, which is really wide, should in theory, have 3 time zones but the government of China has chosen to have the whole country in the same time zone similar to Malaysia.

If you compare the sunrise and sunset information for Shanghai, which is located in the eastern part of China, to the sunrise and sunset information for Lhasa (Tibet), located in the most western part of China, then you will see there is a huge difference. Sunrise in Shanghai might be at 6:30 AM while sunrise in Lhasa will be probably closer to 9 AM. Meanwhile, sunset in Shanghai will be around 5:30 PM and sunset in Lhasa will be at around 7:30 PM. Yet, both cities share the same time as do all cities within China.

So there's a half hour less daylight in Lhasa?

It really isn't any better/worse though.    I mean, we have time zones to make it "feel" like a "typical" day is from 6-8amish to 6 to 10pmish (depending on time of year) for everyone.

But, why really?  I mean, if the entire US was on one time zone, so, on the east coast you work from 9am to 5pm, and on the west coast, because they want to match the daylight, they decide to work from noon to 8pm.... we just would all "know" that... instead of what we do now, which is convert our times to know whether we are getting to the meeting at the right time or not.   I know that it is basically "too late" now to put this back into the bottle and get people used to having only one time zone, but, I don't see it necessarily as silly or wrong.

I was in china for five weeks, splitting time between Shanghai and Urumqi. The time zone thing is a bit of a pain. The eastern area (Shanhgai, Hong Kong, Beijing) all have a 'normal' day (7am-9pm of sunlight), but out far west, the sun doesn't come up till like 10am and can set close to midnight. while they cant ignore the clock, they just instead shift their daily activities, so you go to work at 11am and come home at 8pm.

I thought there were only two time zones in Antarctica.
Daylight and Dark depending on the time of year.

Because they don't have football. No opportunity to fark with people by having games last until 1 AM on a Monday, Tuesday or Friday morning in the east. No opportunity to fark with people by having games start sometime before rush hour ramps up on Mondays and Thursdays in the west.

I've lived on UTC before. You start to realize how psychologically ingrained the signs on the shop doors are. But when you're doing a lot of things across a lot of latitudes it helps if you stop using zones.

China's system sounds way more intelligent.

Can't we just behave like an advanced civilization and do away with time zones completely?

Anyone who needs to operate in daylight just continues to do so, who gives a fark what time the clock says in regards to that?

If only we could. It's a absolutely useless mechanism developed under the guise of "b-b-b-but, think of the children!" I love how "energy savings" was trotted out in 2005 or whenever that was that Congress screwed with DST, completely ignoring the fact that at some point, you get that hour back and energy usage will even itself out.

Comic Book Guy: completely ignoring the fact that at some point, you get that hour back and energy usage will even itself out.

You miss the point if you don't understand that there is "some" energy savings, mostly from various workplace energy... for example, I don't have my lights on in my office because I have big windows in my office and don't need to have them on.   If I was working during a time that there isn't daylight out, I'd more likely have my lights on.

Now, I will agree that, the fact that companies are "locked" into working 9-5 and are not flexible to say "oh, well, the work day should be 10-6 now because the change in light, that is the reason why we can't just go to that.

Ahhh, sounds like my life in 2005 when I was unemployed. I had one hell of a main and 2 decent alts. Last time I had a chance to load my main, my Megathron appears to be missing. Can't remember if it's on an alt for something or what. It was kitted at almost 1 billion ISK in ship and modules.
Maybe one of these days if I get a desktop again I'll play again.

When I was doing satellite stuff in the Army I worked in UTC (or 'Zulu' as we called it). The amount of confusion that happens now even just between mountain and west coast time annoys the crap out of me compared to working with groups all around the globe and being just fine because it was all Zulu.

Ha! EVE is one of the reasons I got in the habit of saying "Good morning!" no matter what time it actually was. My response to why over time went from "it's always morning somewhere" to "that way I'm always cheerful" once I stopped playing the game.

Time zones are pretty silly (west coast USA here).
