Stupid woman falls victim to a stupid system in a stupid country,

Honestly, who thinks it is a great idea to be a white person smuggling drugs into Islamic Indonesia?
Who thinks it is a great idea to go to Indonesia at all?

I'll stick with Hilo, Hawaii and the southern Japanese islands.

Bali is actually very fun, and aside from the bombing has none of the Islamic baggage that you ususally get in a muslim country (Hinu/animistic baggage is minimal).

They aren't going to kill her. Thsi is a bargaining chip with the UK.

Kind of curious how real the threat of harm to her children was.

Call the police. Do not take matters into your own hands and break laws which carry the death penalty.

Advise?

How about RTFA:

Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, wept when judges handed down the sentence and declined to speak to reporters on her way back to prison, covering her face with a floral scarf. She had claimed in court that she was forced to take the drugs into the country by a gang that was threatening to hurt her children.

2013-01-22 01:30:40 PM
Before you traffic drugs, here's a checklist of what you should do:

1) Know the penalty for trafficking drugs in the nation(s) involved in your crime
2) See #1

Most of these "Imprisoned Abroad" shows are about drug mules. I have zero pity. There are always other options. If you get caught, you might get executed (or worse...) and whatever threat they were going to do to your children or whatever would be carried out regardless, most likely, since they assume you squealed.

Sorry, you play, you pay.

2013-01-22 01:31:01 PM
Yeah, no, sorry. I'm not going to go all teary-eyed over this one. She knew what she was doing. I don't believe for one second she was "threatened" into it. And the first-sentence fact that she is a grandmother is an irrelevancy included only to make us pity her.

She knowingly smuggled drugs. She cannot realistically have been unaware of the potential consequences. I shall shed not a tear for her. For her family, perhaps, but not for her.

This is what needs to happen, although they have a lot of oil revenue, so I am not sure how much sticking them for tourist dollars will hurt.

A part of me is inclined to say that she certainly was well aware of the risk she was taking.

Another part of me doesn't believe a sweet old lady like her, who is clearly not a hardened criminal and drug trafficker, would find herself in this mess if she wasn't forced to. Drug mules rarely are. There is a reason why drug mules even exist: for traffickers to prey on innocent people to do their crimes for them.

It would be a really farked up story if she ended up having been forced to pack teh drugs to try to avoid any nasty consequence, like some beloved family member being held hostage by a drug cartel.

If only I had read TFA. But who does that anyway?

from FTA:

"Lindsay has always maintained that she only agreed to carry the package to Bali after receiving threats against the lives of her family," McCulloch said. "She is clearly not a drug kingpin - she has no money to pay for a lawyer, for the travel costs of defense witnesses or even for essentials like food and water."

The judge is probably trying to do her a favor.  If the just gave her a jail sentence the UK would probably just let her server the time.  By giving her the death penalty it forces the them to do what they have to to get her out of the country.  Also it conveniently scares the hell out of anyone that might decide to do that themselves.

Of course people being threatened to carry drugs are probably not very good at not getting caught with the drugs, so it surprises me that any drug traffickers would bother with schemes like this (if in fact that is the case rather than a fiction to try and get off/get a lighter sentence, I have no idea of any of the details of the case to make even an educated guess one way or the other).

This woman sounds like a piece of work:

From the link: "Despite Sandiford's claim to be innocent, Kathryn Bonella, an Australian writer who has researched Bali's drugs world extensively for a book Snowing in Bali, was told by a dealer on the island that he had purchased hashish from Sandiford.

"She used to bring him hashish and more recently moved into cocaine. Lindsay had a story [in court] but obviously it wasn't believed," said Ms Bonella.

Several major drug dealers had fled Bali as soon as they heard Sandiford had been arrested and was cooperating with police, she added.

"She tried to snitch and it backfired spectacularly on her, because it doesn't get any worse than this. Something has happened here, because the prosecutors wanted 15 years."

A former neighbour in Cheltenham described Sandiford as "always up to no good - a real neighbour from hell".

Having had a neighbor from hell like this, who even looked like this, it's likely few of her associates will be wailing too loudly if she meets the firing squad. She put on her Bad Idea jeans the day she decided to expand her criminal activities into an Islamic country with zero tolerance policies on drug dealing.

Prince George:
Also it conveniently scares the hell out of anyone that might decide to do that themselves.

I'd smuggle drugs anywhere, no matter what the risks were, if I believed the alternative was drug runners murdering my family. If her story is legit, no penalty would be a deterrent. If it's not, she's an idiot, yeah.

I do think developing countries use very harsh drug sentences as a deterrent simply because they don't have the resources to engage in the high-tech, high-efficiency policing that richer nations can. It's game theory, if the equation is:

criminal cost=(chance of getting caught)x(harshness of penalty)

and the first value is low, you raise the second value to compensate. It probably works somewhat, but obviously not always.
