Does this mean my ATT cell phone will get reception at work now? We are across the street from the city's largest hospital, zero bars.

Weird, didn't realize Verizon left some pieces of Alltel around. Thought they bought it whole.

The board meeting:

"Damnit, we just received word from the department of justice. they say we aren't allowed to purchase T-Mobile and swell our already oversized telecom footprint. People, we NEED to be at least twice the size of Verizon! Now someone come up with an idea NOW!"

"Sir? What about buying up all the crappy second rate mobile companies, they don't take up as big of a market share individually, but collectively they are larger than t-mobile..."

"That's a shiat idea johnson, get out of my office... I know, i'll start buying up all the crappy second rate mobile companies. Their market share is small, but if i get them all, it would be bigger than t-mobile! I'm a genious!"

AT&T bought out Alltel around here a couple of years ago. That is why I had Alltel, and now I have a tracphone.

FTA: The smaller carrier is particularly popular in the rural areas of Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina -- places that the nation's second largest mobile network could use a boost in.

i thought so too, since I live in the LittleRock area, they started naming everything Verizon. Then while I am here in GA I see they are running alltel commericals

Verizon had to divest a number of Alltel markets for FCC to approve the merger.  AT&T bought most of those.  Other companies bought the rest.

/so really AT&T is not buying Alltel

Not all of it. The current incarnation of Alltel is pretty much the crumbs (or "toaster leavin's" if you will). That's what AT&T is scooping up.

gameshowhost: [4.bp.blogspot.com image 850x543]

Hardly., though in a couple of years it may turn out that AT&T will be the only GSM carrier of note in the US (T-Mobile is expected to de-activate it's GSM network and transition to voice-over-LTE after its merger with MetroPCS is complete).

Really not sure where all this "break up AT&T again" talk is coming from, particularly when discussing wireless service which is a relatively open market (most people in the US have access to at least 4 different wireless carriers), and after what amounts to a minor purchase.

Now if you want to talk about land service and infrastructure (where three companies hold regional monopolies for >90% of the US), that's a different discussion entirely.

I remember when they broke up AT&T, and it was a big farking deal. It really did feel like the government was doing something to keep those big, bad corporations from screwing us over.

Ah, the good old days.

That's different. ATT already has those customers. They were transitioned back in 2011, and most of them were in western areas. There were still a few areas where Alltel still operated under their own name. This is a different agreement.

I'm ditching Verizon for a no-contract option. I neither need nor desire 4G, data, etc. It seems, however, they are trying to grab the shorthairs with a death grip on mandatory data plan phones. I just want to text a few things, call in an emergency, and get service out here in the boonies where I live. I do not want to pay $120+ a month for a damn cell phone. AT&T gets crappy service, but T-Mobile doesn't seem so bad of an option.

I had Alltel for years, and while I did complain about them, I didn't realize just how bad it would be when Verizon took over.

Poor Alltel. I miss them. Usually good customer service, good coverage. Even worse for my friends who switched to Alltel to escape Verizon/AT&T only to have VZ buy them.
