tricycleracer: DSI hope to launch their first prospecting spacecraft, which they dub Firefly, in just two years time for missions lasting between two to six months.

Bravo, nerds.  Bravo.

So the project is gonna be cancelled after a handful of missions?

'Using low cost technologies, and combining the legacy of our space program with the innovation of today's young, high, tech geniuses, we will do things that would have been impossible just a few years ago,' said chairman Rick Tumlinson.

The addition of two commas makes it more funny in my mind.

Financed by billionaires?

Hell, they should pony up and pay their fair share to the government instead of blowing their disposable incomes on risky new ventures. Imagine how much cool and profitable stuff the federal government could do with that kind of loot to advance the progress of mankind!

I do not like the men on this asteroid. They are uncouth and fail to appreciate my better qualities. I have something of value to contribute to this mine if they would only recognize it. Today over lunch I tried to improve morale and build a sense of camaraderie among the men by holding a humorous, round-robin discussion of the early days of the mission. My overtures were brutally rejected. These men do not want a happy asteroid. They are deeply sick and try to compensate by making me feel miserable. Last week was my birthday. Nobody even said "happy birthday" to me. Someday this tape will be played and then they'll feel sorry.

Worse that that, it means that when the Reavers take take the ship, they'll rape the crew to death, eat their flesh, and sew their skins into their clothing - and if the crew is very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

Asteroids are like Africa.

Whichever European power first plants their flag there, owns it. And unlike Africa, asteroids are abundant, so Germany can get good ones as well.

However, it's not yet clear who owns the asteroids spinning around near-Earth space, which is, according to the 1967 Global Space Treaty, 'a global commons'.
