Not bad.

Still... in before the popcorn brigade.

Nerdiness is hard to define. It's not just social awkwardness. Being a complete biatch or a loon is certainly socially awkward, but not nessecarily nerdy. I can't quite put my finger on what makes up a nerd, yet there is no mistaking a nerd when you meet one.

Watching Star Trek and playing Skyrim does not make you a nerd, even if you say "TNG"; this is the description someone who is not a nerd would provide, similar to the writers of the Big Bang Theory. Nothing to be ashamed of for me, at least not as far as my nerdom is concerned.

I don't know what it is about her, but I find Carrie Brownstein very cute.

Yeah, playing dress up and swinging a sword is pretty nerdy. Video games and popular television shows are not.

True nerddom identification requires a shibboleth of some kind.

I submit: Gazebo.

You're not a real nerd unless you act exactly like the people on Big Bang Theory, or something.

/hate that show
//love portlandia
///really hate the pandering stereotypes in BBT

Too late! (somehow, my brother, who is arguably a larger nerd than I am, did not know about this till this past holiday).

nerds have been twisted into an exploitable market for media and merchandisers to profit from. as always, there is a portion of the population that is herd mentality, just looking for something to hitch their trailer to.

long ago in my HS days the nerds were not just incredibly intelligent over-achievers with horrible acne, little to no social skills and the worst taste in clothing, they were also outright creepy kids. the kind you just felt would go home and sniff their sisters panties. sure, some of them were known to play D&D or for their love of Star Trek. but the true mark of a nerd was the incredible creepiness. those kids were very few. i felt sorry for them. they were obviously uncomfortable in their own skin.

then again, being a teen ager is a terribly trying time in life. kids are cruel, you're tired of shiat from adults, and your body is zooming in a million directions with hormones. simply miserable.

All it takes for someone to be nerdy for something is for them to be OVERLY enthusiastic about a particular topic of interest. Then you break it down by what is socially acceptable in your region of Earth.

Examples:

-Paint your body and dress up to go cheer for football game? Nerdy but socially acceptable
-Paint your body and dress up to cheer for a video game? Nerdy but NOT socially acceptable

-Wait for hours in line to see Oprah? Nerdy but socially acceptable
-Wait for hours in line to see Leonard Nemoy? Nerdy but NOT socially acceptable

As a rule of thumb in the States: Americans tend to view anything to do with fiction as NOT socially acceptable.

You are conflating geek and nerd. They are not the same thing.

Geek is what you said

Nerd requires the strong outsider connotation, social awkwardness, and general inability to fit into larger society.

Sorry, after I hit "add comment" I realized how personal that sounded. I have no idea if you are a nerd or if you paint your body and go to football games. And those two are not necessarily mutually exclusive I suppose, but... anybody who paints their body and goes to football games and then uses that behavior as evidence of being a nerd is mistaken.

Do you know anything about hackers?

Can you jam with the console cowboys in cyberspace?

Ever read Neuromancer?

Ever experience New Wave? Next Wave? Dream Wave? Or cyberpunk?

I didn't think so.
