it's a type of bacteria that builds up on the bottom of a sewer pipe near a funeral home.

also the main ingredient in Deadmau5.

My dad got me hooked on Grand Funk Railroad and Bo Diddley (Though to be honest he was a schizophrenic) when I was about 11. I discovered Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin at 12. Not quite sure what the folks felt about those choices, though I know I played it "too loud" and got yelled at. Actually, I don't think it was my musical choices so much as the volume.

/almost 50 and still blasting the volume
//Thank FSM the car has a kicking stereo, the neighbors don't appreciate it when I rock the house.

Ishkur: drateR: So what's the difference...honestly. Techno, trance, dubstep... Don't know, don't really care, but would like to know what the difference is.

Well, it depends. How patient are you and how long of an explanation do you want?

I guess that depends on how much you want to explain the differences. If there really is any. I kinda think all are under the umbrella of "techno", but I'm old.

Dubstep. Or so I've heard. I've been really out of the electronic music scene for the past 15 years or so.

Well, you remember Aphex Twin, right?

Of course. Saw him live once (with Orbital and Moby) and actually met him at a club in London where Squarepusher was playing.

Dedmon: Say what you will, but tell me this isn't a beautiful piece of music. Link
It's one of Skrillex's song transcribed and played on piano. It gave me pause, and I realize it's not all random sounds thrown together. Do listen to the link.

He's got some great parts and pieces, he just puts them together in a really sloppy way. High energy, but low craft. Although I just described Nirvana, and when I was 14-ish that was what I listened to. So I'm officially Just Too Old for Skrillex.

Teach that guy some music theory, and he'd really be something. Give him a few years/ albums and we'll see.

AverageAmericanGuy: If it's too loud, you're too old.

Skrillex isn't for you to sit down and relax to. It's to get your body moving on the dance floor. He's a genius at his craft.

If it's loud enough that the bar biatch can't hear your order as you scream into her ear, it's too farking loud.

When I was 12, circa 1986, a friend gave me two TDK D-90 cassette tapes that he "taped off his brother's record player." One contained the entirety of Pink Floyd's "The Wall." The other had Rush "Moving Pictures" on side one and Iron Maiden "Number of the Beast" on side two.

I like to think that it was the greatest gift an almost-teen boy in 1986 could possibly have received, except maybe having puberty suddenly grow his dong to epic proportions.

Bedstead Polisher: Ok. I have to ask. There are 12 year olds that listen to jazz???

I was listening to Ornette Coleman when I was 11 and briefly locked up when I was 12. I am of the opinion good jazz leads to delinquency.

Seems kind of reminiscent of the 80's techno music scene:

1) Herbie Hancock - Rockit

2) Newcleus - Jam On It

3) Art of Noise - Paranoimia

But take that, separate and isolate the melodic portions from the discordant portions and voila - dubstep.

Dubstep:

1) Pumped Up Kicks, dubstepped

2) (Note: very loud): Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, Skrillex

And there seem to be various sub-flavors of dubstep, per the above links.

/also, even WHITEHOUSE gets boring. That's why they did the Skrillex 'thing' 25 years ago (like APhex Twin did 15 years ago) and now use tablas, congas, and other things (including getting QUIET) to produce music that's much more scary...

When EBM oozed out, it was shiat. Spooky techno...but it was popular! Hell, listen to (if you dare) the latest PTV stuff...not so fun...

I am a music asshole.

That would be wrong. Techno is one thing. Trance is another thing. Dubstep is another thing. They're three entirely different things and about the only thing in common between them is that they're all made electronically (sequences and synthesizers n such).

Quite a bit easier for me to list what I DON'T like than what I do (my dislikes--my REAL dislikes--are pretty much mostly New Country and Christian Contemporary, which really only differ by percentages of Homoerotic Jesus Fellation and/or slide guitar). And yeah, I'll admit, I actually like some of Skrillex's stuff...not all of it, but some. (Then again, I also listen to everything from dubstep to speed metal to decent pop with a minimum of Autotune to hip-hop to powwow Round Dance songs to Ukranian women's choirs. My music collection tends to be a mix of all kinds of eclectica up to and including more than a few video-game soundtracks, a fair number of these NOT from Square Enix. :D)

As to the comment someone made earlier about how some Skrillex stuff works well acoustically--I'm actually quite surprised how well orchestral arrangements of Skrillex stuff work in sounding, well, soundtrack-ish :D

/then again, I'm also impressed that stuff that sounds like compositions in Impulse Tracker from the early 90s seems to be getting recording contracts :D

This. The Netherlands has a reputation in the US as being easy going and liberal, based solely on their tolerance of private drug use and prostitution. But they're actually extremely conservative in a lot of odd ways. They just have a different way of being conservative.
