so if I were looking for a way to be a completely prickish dickwad, the GOP is a great example for me to follow...?

According to the GOP, with Christian values like honesty and integrity.

only when they're getting screwed over by a GOP dirty trick so...yeah, I guess you've got a point.

Meh - GOP is grasping at straws - the younger generation wants fark all to do with them - so any gain is short-term and then the tables will turn - no amount of gerrymandering will save them in the future.

Through blatant power grabs taking advantage of people leaving town? Power grabs that are probably unconstitutional under the state constitution (the VA constitution says redistricting should occur every ten years)?  This is going to go straight to court.

By far the biggest indignity is that right after the Republicans claimed that this was about creating more black districts, after they passed the bill, they adjourned "In memory of  Stonewall [F*cking] Jackson."

Republicans can't win in a fair fight so they play dirty.

Don't they always?

I suspect we'll see more of these between-census redistricting tactics in upcoming years. Redistricting loses it's effect a little bit with each subsequent election after a census (because people move and such). Ongoing redistricting is a way to continue the manipulation.

The GOP is a festering pit of ooze and verminous slime.  Rodents, every one, they slink along under cover of darkness or distraction to carry out their ill-conceived and traitorous tasks.  Would that I could see them slain in the public square, their desperate cries of protest drowned out by their own anguished screams of unimaginable agony.

I'd rather just hand a pen to the democrats and say 'draw the districts any way ya want for the next 10 years'.  when the GOP complains (and you can bet they will) we can tell 'em to STFU, they had their chance to play nice.  they thought it would be more fun to cheat.

Lacks a certain flair I suppose, but effective.

I prefer to see it as a form of karmic balance.  the GOP has cheated for the past 10 years...so in return we let the Democrats cheat for 10 years.  fair is fair, right?

Increasingly the GOP reminds me of a Japanese soldier isolated on some far away island still fighting a war that ended 20 years ago.

But only if that soldier had ample reliable reports that the war was over, but responded by doubling down.

It's your grave, Republicans, dig it as deep as you like, we'll just watch and alternately laugh and shake our heads.

While that may be true, their idea of getting off life support is to completely destroy our democracy so they keep getting elected.

There's politics, and there's subversion of democracy. The GOP seems to making a show of the latter recently.

No, we really wouldn't. Please find a single time that the Democrats engaged in gerrymandering or some other way of subverting democracy and we cheered it.

Fark you and your hypothetical false equivalence.

I like how you tried to turn this back on the Democrats.  the Republicans here did something extremely slimy...in fact, it's SO slimy and ugly that you don't even bother to defend it.  no, you actually blame it on the Democrats!

amazing.

Please point out where I blame the democrats. I implied that they are hypocrites because they pull this sort of thing all of the time. Look at how obamacare got passed and tell me that that was completely above board. You and DamnYankees need to either grow the fark up or pay more attention to current events.

amazing....indeed.

Cite one case of democrats redrawing a district outside of the usual time frame in order to gain themselves a seat.

this is an article about Republican tactics and you....blamed the Democrats?  why mention the Democrats here at all.  this is entirely about the Republicans.  so - lemme ask you a question.  do you agree with what the Virginia GOP did?  do you think it was a smart move?

That profile made my brain hurt from stupid. It also makes me think he's either a troll or... very sad.

Look at Weaver's profile. Look at DamnYankees' profile. Look at your profile. Don't look at mine, because it still has that badge. Some philosophy, some introspection, some literature, some politics.

How bereft must you be of personality or ethos to craft an entire profile, and then base your entire posting on Fark around hating liberals? Around portraying the "other" in a bad light instead of offering anything else? It's empty. It's sad.

Also, Neo, redistricting, while skeevy, is a far sight different from redistricting while the only check against it in a democratically elected government is out of the state to attend a function. That is cheating, if not in the letter of the law, then in the spirit. It is thwarting the will of the people by not allowing all parties who represent those people to contribute to the decision, specifically because if all parties contribute then your goal will not be met.

Since the redistricting has to be approved by the DOJ are the republicans looking for a fight with Obama? either the DOJ approves it and they get more seats or the DOJ shoots it down and they accuse Obama of misuse of power

Are they still bound by the VRA for redistricting? I know they are a Southern state, but I guess I don't think of VA as being that bad these days.
