is number 8 a "dude" or a girl? half the face says guy the other half says otherwise. it would be appreciated if one of the many photoshoppers that come to this thread would do the split onehalf doubled thing to each side to show you what i am talking about.

I took one look at the guy with the bloody face and said "i bet he's charged with assaulting a cop." Only a cop knows how to beat you bloody but leave little to no swelling or bruises.

Was trying to figure that one out myself, I will say if you are going to get a DUI wearing a shirt that says "The Dude" you probably are good for an unfair profiling defense.

It's usually to do with solicitation of prostitution. Perhaps they don't have proof of any prostitution so just book them on loitering charges to get them off the street.

Just gonna remind people of this:

BUSTED

Being a journalist, I go to other places sometimes on assignment. This time, I take my friend Megan with me. It's Pitchfork and Exxxotica, which is pretty good for a laugh. I promise her I'm going to be fun, but I end up not being fun at all. Before we left, I start getting a number of messages. Not only is my mugshot featured in Busted, an exploitation piece of shiat that takes peoples' mugshots and compiles them all into a cheap, shiatty, paper magazine sold in gas stations and liquor stores - it's on the front page. And it's not a great picture of me, and it's not interesting compared to all the crackheads that grace the pages, but it's the featured one. Right on the front. We pick up a copy on our way out of town and she and I both agree on one thing: "Who reads that shiat rag anyhow?" But it turns out a lot of people do. And they will take it to the bar and show it around and then deny it was them like a pussy when you KNOW it was them. They will be ambiguous and try to vicariously live through you as the authority on your life. They will have the nerve to tell you, "We all just wanted to know what happened!" but somehow they never think to stop showing it to people, never consider how it might impact your job and future opportunities, and just CALL you or text you. No, that would be what a person with tact would do, and these are people who don't care if you're okay, only what happened, only what is interesting to talk about in public.

But that's not enough. People post it on their own Facebooks and say, "What's going on?" They post it on yours. They tell your staff that their boss is in trouble. Someone even sends me a message saying they went to the 7/11 at 3 a.m. to get a copy. Some people want to frame it. A memorabilia shrine dedicated to your humiliation. And it's July 11. So everyone is going to 7/11 for a free Slurpie. The messages do not stop. The texts do not stop. Everyone asking if I knew about it, as though somehow I forgot that I had been arrested.

That's not enough either. It makes The Smoking Gun's 16 mugshots of the week, so it makes the Fark Photoshop contest. And people leave comments like, "Have her washed and sent to my chamber," and talk about how you look like Audrey Horne in Twin Peaks and Kristen Stewart, or how your eyes look crooked. They're all so clever. I don't really look like that photo. Mugshots never make you look amazing, I suppose.

I research this a bit and find out that there are websites that will display your mugshot online until the Apocalypse. It will be one of the first things people find when they Google you. Your mugshot is taken when you are arrested. Your charge may change or your case may be dismissed, but the mugshot only applies to what you were brought in on when they booked you. So, the mugshot is not accurate. The disclaimer that all people are innocent until proven guilty means nothing to the voyeurs who give a fark about mugshots.

If you want your mugshot removed, you can pay someone to have it done. It's $100 to have mine removed, I find. There are some cases where the company who collects the mugshots will send letters to your neighbors with your photo and charge if you do not pay them. This is blatant extortion, but all considered legal in areas where mugshots are released. I suppose someone might argue it is for the public good, but I don't feel any safer knowing who on my block got a DUI or got caught with a joint or had less than an eighth of mushrooms in a drawer somewhere. I feel disgusted by this kind of invasion of privacy. And I always have. In 2009, I wrote a song about how the magazine was bullshiat, after a few of my friends showed up in it. It was on my band's first record. One of my friends lost her job. The other was too humiliated to go out in public. We went to a Blockbuster to get some films to stay in and watch together, and a woman there came up to him and asked him about his photo in Busted. We were only outside for 15 minutes that day. 15 farking minutes.

It gets worse. Certain mugshot sites will let you choose to browse by race, or find women who are "cokewhores."

And one of our local radio stations, WGRD, has "Busted Hottie of the Month," where they choose the most attractive of the mugshots. And the comments are, of course, exactly as you can imagine. Do enough Googling, you can find out where this hottie lives. Maybe stop by and say hello. What's her privacy to you? She's a criminal. And she probably knows how to party.

I think it's time FARK grows up a little and gets beyond the mugshot roundup stuff.

Yeah, you're right, it does look like a zip tie, although it looks much longer than the ones they sometimes use as handcuffs. Also seems strange that it's in the mugshot like that. Still, that's probably what it is.

So, what you're saying is it would be fair if we took down the mugshots of the people who were found not guilty after arrest? I'd be ok with that.

ProdigalSigh: How do you really get arrested for loitering? Don't the cops usually ask you to leave? Why wouldn't you?

It's usually to do with solicitation of prostitution. Perhaps they don't have proof of any prostitution so just book them on loitering charges to get them off the street.

I admit to not knowing what actual practice is, but I'd think they shouldn't even be public until charges are filed (at the earliest). Ideally, if you get arrested then released without charges, there should be no social repercussions.

Ah, love the short memories at FARK. The woman who wrote that, from a much larger article she wrote concerning how even a false and overturned conviction in this day and age is still treated as them being guilty, was busted for drugs left behind by a former resident at a house she just moved into, and then was jacked around by the legal system and online communities.

But yup, it is all harmless fun that doesn't hurt anyone.

Must suck to live in a small town where people have nothing better to do than worry about everyone else. You don't like standing out, try moving to a city with more people. You have to do something spectacular to get recognized when you live in a city with a million other people in it.

May be different for women, but personally I got a kick out of my mugshot (posted above) I was in a bar having a drink waiting for a friends band to play a set when a fight broke out, it spread and soon everyone it seemed was throwing down, I decided to head for the door when something hit me upside the head (if you look at my mugshot above you can see the blood matted hair on the left (your right) side of my head) well the next thing I know a cop is hauling me up and handcuffing me, it wasn't until the next morning that they reviewed th bars security tapes and saw my entire contribution to the fight was to get my length measured on the floor whilst I was bravely running like hell, my mug still stayed on their website with the drunk and disorderly, resisting arrest (apparently being dazed and unable to walk qualifies as resisting) and affray charges listed even though the DA refused to file any charges. I think it was over a year before my mugshot dropped off of their site, I was kinda disappointed the smoking gun didn't pick it up

1) You can't possibly right laws to cover every possible corner case (but they're trying!), so you've got to start with some ideal concept and expand on it. You start with, "you can't kill people" and then get to, "except in self-defense," etc. I mean ideal more in the physics sense than in the "if everything were sunshine and puppies" sense.
2) The media doesn't release mugshots to themselves, derpdy farking derp.

Then again, I suppose the release of booking photos is preferable to arrests being not open to public scrutiny, so there's that.

And part of the problem is in that time, a lot of other sites could take that photo and the posted info and list it themselves, along with any other info they can find. Want it taken down? Gotta pay them. In the meantime, prospective employers could come across that site when doing a background check on you, and it would negatively affect your chances with a good likelihood that they will never ask you for clarification of what happened.

That one woman's account is far from the only such occurrence, and this is why I hope dark will grow beyond this practice. I used to point and laugh like others, and then I saw the real effect this stuff can have on people's lives. It lost all humor after that realization.

What's even funnier is that I've recognized some of the profile names in these mugshot threads as being the same ones spouting outrage at the (admittedly stupid) actions of a newspaper publishing public info of gun owners in New York State.

Law enforcement is actually more along the lines of revenge than actual justice.
It's almost as if the cops "sheeat, we arrested this person because our perfect-in-every-way officer judged them as being bad, but they got off on a TECHNICALITY. So let's get back at them and ruin their lives by publishing their mug". And cops are pretty much immune from any lawsuits from the wronged..they basically have zero conscience.

But people in general support this emotion-driven kangaroo court "justice."

Until the pigs end up doing the same to them.

Here's the original "BUSTED" post. tl;dr--special snowflake gets busted for a minimal amount of drugs (the cops were apparently after a "medical marijuana" grower who had just moved out) and is outraged that pretty white girls who like to blog about "murder motels" get busted, too, and ZOMG The War Against Drugs Is So Unfair, You Guys. So, now no one gets to laff over mug shots. People like her either forget or never knew (or cared) that the reason why mug shots are publicly available is so that the cops can't just leave her ass in jail indefinitely; they have to actually show who they're keeping locked up at any given time. (And I say this as someone who's got a couple mugshots of his own on file, and wouldn't be too happy if they ended up on TSG or whatever, but if I didn't want to do the time...)
