How is it that random people can tack arbitrary charges onto a phone bill and then collect the money from the phone company?

ambassador_ahab: 70 Million?!  You could probably call an obscure, former Soviet republic for an entire year and not rack up a bill like that.

Oddly enough, when I was in high school a family from Bosnia moved to town and called home every night. They ended up with a phone bill in the tens of thousands because they didn't realise that calling halfway across the planet cost money. They were deeply, deeply stupid. They bought a convenience store, then stocked it by buying from the 7-11 next door and reselling that product at a higher price.

Best part of that? The family's last name was Basic.

How about they take the money that they're going to take out of this guy's ass and use it to update the phone system to prevent caller ID spoofing? They should also fine all the phone companies involved for allowing this schmuck to add services to their customer's bills without verification that the customers had actually requested the service.

Fark you, dude.

The local comedy radio station is now all sports, so I'm skipping all over the dial trying to find someone decent to listen to on the way to/from work, and it's earworm after earworm after earworm.

And now you had to add to that. Which is why I say, fark you very much.

OK, here's the thing.  Stories like this really, really test my innate sense of fairness.  I try to think of myself as a reasonably moral person, in the sense that I wouldn't intentionally screw over others just to make a buck.  But shiat, seventy MILLION bucks?  That's pretty hard to pass up.  And you know that they'll end up copping a plea where they pay back MOST of the money, and are forbidden from ever doing it again, but won't serve any jail time.

It almost makes me want to look into how to do that.

Almost.

That Mother Farker hit my phone bill a couple of years ago.

I noticed the voice mail services on a bill and then started looking back, I had payed out over $200 over the months that I had not looked carefully at my phone bill. My wife had assumed that it was some thing that we automatically had via Comcast who was our phone provider at the time. First I drilled Comcast found out we did have a voice mail account through them (Included for free as part of the phone service) that we were not using. When I pointed this out to there billing department and asked why they would think I would have / want an extra cost VM service when I was not using there VM service all I got was dead air. It took a couple of weeks and Comcast was no help at all, I had to get to a person with the 3rd party billing company. The 3rd party claimed no responsibility (we only handle billing for our clients) and initially only offered to cancel my service. I researched them found out what a bad name they were getting and that I was by no means alone in getting charges put on my bill by them for services I never ordered. After that I threatened them with legal action and pointed out that I knew all about the reports of there abuse. They eventually caved and I got all of my money back.

Everything about the way the phone companies run there business sucks
* There tech is week and has become a huge problem allowing illegal marketing and scammers free run of the global phone network.
* They charge way too much for there services.
* There billing allows for 3rd parties to place charges on my bill with out any proof
* They do not go to bat for customers when the charges are challenged, you have to against the 3rd party

Phone companies get paid coming and going and every other place in-between. They feel no responsibility to protect there consumer customer base, why because someone is paying for the the calls that are being placed to you. I am sure they also get a piece of the action when a 3rd party bills you as well.
