He may be all of those things, but he has been in a lot of good movies throughout his career, especially movies like this. I will give it a chance.

The greatest thing about that movie/role, was he wasn't all that different than his usual characters. He just played Tom Cruise in goofy makeup. He is the next generation William Shatner, if only he'd embrace it already (although Jack Reacher was really close).

Wait a minute, Tom Cruise is a bigger star than Beck?

No actor is "overpaid." Each is worth exactly as much as he or she can get. Just like almost everyone else in the private sector.

Some of the movies he's in look so cool that I wish he weren't in them.

That's why guys like DiCaprio can retire now and guys like the skinny guy with the bees on his head have to keep making movies.

Again, he is bat shiat insane but he is great at his job.

I haven't seen Reacher yet and don't plan on it, but I do want to see the new one with pretty ladies and Morgan Freeman.

Nah. Some actors are overpaid - just as some financial instruments can be overvalued - because some of the people assessing their value are not good at it.

Eddie Murphy is overpaid, for example, because he's still getting A-list money and he is a B-C-list drawer, which means people paying him to be in their movies are making a really bad investment.

Tom Cruise isn't overpaid, because his movies almost always make money, even given the amount he is paid.

He is, however, crazier than a badger with schizoaffective disorder and a meth problem.

I realize that you should do your best to keep an artist's (writer, musician, actor, whatever) personal life from affecting your enjoyment of their work, but I just can't take Tom Cruise seriously in anything, especially action movies. So while the movie looks like an interesting concept and movie I just won't be able to enjoy it.

2013-01-21 04:28:43 PM
He acts in films that I usually (though not always - Far & Away anyone?) enjoy watching. I don't really care what he does with his personal life.

Women, OTOH, care a lot. The owner of Paramount fired him after MI:3 claiming the whole Katie Holmes/Scientology meltdown cost the movie $100 million in revenue.

"Cruise was elated yet distracted by more earthly concerns. He was openly complaining about his lack of a girlfriend, and so once again Miscavige tasked church members with solving this problem. Cruise himself held auditions at the Celebrity Centre, under the guise of casting for his next "Mission: Impossible" film."

I always want to bag on him for being a loon, but I find him to be such a good, charismatic actor that I just can't. Plus, a few people I know met him while he was filming Vanilla Sky and they said he was very sweet and cool to everyone so I really can't hate on the guy.

I used to go to the same retreats as him at St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati back in the 70's.

Tom Cruise is bugfark insane, just like every other Scientologist on the planet.  I have no great love for organized religion, but I don't think Episcopalians are part of a cult.  Scientology's practices, the way they treat people who defect (if they're even able to).....it's like something out of the Peoples' Temple, minus the grape Flavor-Aid.

If a Mormon came to the front door asking if I'd be interested in reading the Book of Mormon, I'd politely decline.  If a Scientologist asked me if I'd like read Dianetics, I'd tell them to fark off.

Agreed. He's especially good when he's played against type(Born On The Fourth Of July, Tropic Thunder, Magnolia and my favorite, Collateral).

Interesting that you think making an intelligent business decision is intrinsic to having a vagina.

The owner of Paramount fired him because the studio lost a lot of money, not because of his personal life.

Tiny little nutjob, reinforced by years of manipulation. Just... wow.

Someday, when we move beyond religion, this will all seem like a bad dream.

I believe what beta_plus was referring to is that his meltdown with Katie Holmes drove women away from seeing his movie and hence cost the studio 100M dollars in revenue.

So, you're sort of an idiot for saying the same thing back, but insulting the guy who said it based on your own lack of reading comprehension.

Who gives a shiat if he's cray-cray. And who gives a shiat if he's queer. He's an actor, I expect most people involved in theater to be gay. I like the majority of his movies.

BTW, I saw "Collateral" for the first time a few weeks ago. He was frigging amazing in that. I wasn't buying him for the first 30 minutes or so, but damn, he got pretty deep into the character as the film went on.

Do the movies he appears in make money because Tom Cruise is in them or because they are good movies?

Well, Tom Cruise has got the acting method. He's got the skill. He's also got the flake down cold; but can he flake on and flake off? I don't know whether that can be taught. He's got to learn how not to be himself, and on purpose.

Cruise filmed parts of War of the Worlds in little ol Bayonne, NJ and from what I heard from the locals, he was a supremely nice guy who treated everyone he met really well.

He may be batshiat insane but he's good to the Little People.

Only thing I ever saw him in that worked for me was Rain Man. Spot on. Someone new what he was and he fit.

Lots of actors seem to be batshiat crazy, at least at some point....Nick Cage, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale.....the list could go on and on....I think the best actors are crazy enough that sometimes really think they are the character - as opposed to just getting into character - making the movie "real"

Think about it - he spends all his personal time being told that he's a virtual demi-god for a "religion" dreamed up by a bad SF writer, and all his work time playing roles in which he's the BEST X IN THE WORLD. Of course he's cheerful, polite, and magnanimous - he's just being gracious to us all. He knows we're grateful just to be in his diminuitive shadow, and in return he showers us with his good graces.

Creepy.

They just added Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol to Netflix's instant stream. I was visiting my parents for the weekend, and my dad really wanted to see it.

I hated the first one for what they did to Jim Phelps.
The second one was like watching John Woo do a bad parody of himself.
I caught MI:3 on a plane and dozed off during it.

But damn, MI:GP was actually a solid action flick.
