And here I always thought the pathos of that song was in Michael's voice. It just shows how much emotion is contained in the music.

A couple months ago they had some dude on NPR who had done a study of the top 100 hits each year for like 70 years and showed there is a statistical overall trend away from major key into minor key for pop music. Also showed correlation in downer lyrics to minor key. Sort of obvious but interesting still. Something ridiculous like 60 years ago almost every top 40 hit was in major key and now it is the exact opposite.

Minor keys are supposed to sound "sad" whilst major keys are supposed to sound "bright".

It's the interaction of the beat frequencies between various note intervals on the hairs of your cochlea. The closer to a simple integer relationship, the "nicer" the sound.

Except not. Both a major chord and a minor chord have the same set of intervals: a minor third, a major third, and a fifth. Just different order of major and minor third.

HoratioGates: I'm kind of partial to Perfect Circle's cover of John Lennon's 'Imagine' in a minor key.

This version is very wrist slitty. Not a version of the tune I ever want to hear again.
Now the Rage Against The Machine Jazz version of Killing (Gently and Jazzily) In The Name Of And the soft jazz Metallica were so discordant with what my brain hears they both make me laugh. Every time I hear them.

Really? I always thought the original sounded depressing enough as is, the Perfect Circle version sounds like the kind of thing you'd imagine some suicidal teenager would listen to as they swallow their pills or slit their wrists.

Yeah, I kinda wonder what the rule they used was...
I think they just take the Am scale and raise every C->C#, F-F#, G-G#, which would put it in Amajor, but convert the F major chord in the original to an F#m, and the G chord to a G-half-diminished.... The F#m sounds right, but I'm not sure about the diminished G.

That would also be easiest thing to do in software.

I liked it.
