Without actually knowing much about major/minor scales/not (I'm a drummer; I'm sorry!), the breakdown/bridge part where it's mostly just mandolin ("That was just a dream (x2)") sounded amazingly generic. Like, something out of a 3 Doors Down song except, you know, on mandolin. Same with the outro chords - very guitar-love-ballad-y. Really struck me how those two portions sound so different having undergone such a(n apparently) basic shift.

nmrsnr: And here I always thought the pathos of that song was in Michael's voice. It just shows how much emotion is contained in the music

This is changing his voice along with the rest of the music. I'd say Stipe is still providing the majority of the meaning in the song. Listen to an instrumental version and see if it's just as moving.

Listening to that made me crazy. I kept waiting for the correct note to be played, but it never came. Gotta find the original version now. .

Interesting find, subby.

Even the very end of the song takes on a whole new tone. I kinda like it.

vernonFL: I forgot how gay that video was.

Whenever I see it, I hear Weird Al's voice-over in my head, particularly the hand-farts when Michael Stipe is flapping his arms.

DeltaPunch: Vacation Bible School: CavalierEternal: I really like the first one they did with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters".

I just wish Metallica would go back to their jazz phase

Hot damn! Always makes me laugh. Also, this video sets a standard in music parody videos that is hard to beat. They actually rerecorded a Metallica song as smooth Jazz, put the original lyrics back in place, and then dropped the whole new song over a live video. If only more people put that kind of effort into parody music videos....

I think if you play it backwards it summons a soulless sound engineer. Just FYI.

It makes Stipe sound more in key.

Neat! The entire time that I listened to the song I was trying to hear the original in my head, but this somewhat upbeat version of it dominated my perception. I think I do like it. To have that song be anything but depressing was rather nice.

From the comments there:

"It's like nostalgia for a parallel universe. I wonder how an Alzheimer's patient would process this."

That's a Ph.D thesis that practically writes itself, and which the entire department would read to boot.

Someone get on that please!

I think Stipe came up with that song after Morrisey's contagious whine factor was injected into Stipe's anus via Morrisey's penis.  Then it lay dormant for a few years, and woke up with a vengeance.

Call me old and grouchy but I really cannot stand anything past Life Rich Pageant.  I liked em when they were young and more a country rock folk wanna be velvet underground but as cool as johnny cash thing they had going on.

More like a colorized version of the black and white, destroying the impact of the artists' vision.

Studio 360 did a pretty interesting little segment a few weeks back on minor/major pop songs complete with comparisons of what something like Barbie Girl would sound like. It was a fun listen.

They didn't lose me until "Automatic for the People". I kinda liked "New Adventures in Hi-Fi", but that was only a blip in the ocean of suck.

cameroncrazy1984: capt.hollister: Rebecca Watson posted this same link the other day. I watched and diskliked it then.
I watched and disliked it now.

Maybe it's because I know and like the original, but it just sounds all wrong to me.

We all know and like the original. Some of us are just more willing to see familiar things from a different perspective.

Actually, I'm extremely open minded and always willing to try something new. Here's something to ponder, though: you don't actually have to like everything that you see from a different perspective. Often you will like what you see and hear, and sometimes you won't. There are times when the original and familiar really is more aesthetically pleasing to you than the revisited.

It's the interaction of the beat frequencies between various note intervals on the hairs of your cochlea. The closer to a simple integer relationship, the "nicer" the sound.

How to write whiny music:
Step 1. Find a church hymnal.
Step 2. Transpose to minor key.
Step 3. Increase tempo until you can sob to it comfortably.

Yeah, this is a lot 'lighter' in terms of the colors it kicks off in my head (synthesia). Dear god, this is weird as hell to listen to, my brain's coming up with all new patterns but  it's the same song...

/Think I made thirty seconds before switching it off.

Do a truly depressing REM song like 'everybody hurts', let's see if that tone changes.
