Sounds like a 60s Christmas song.

Oldiron_79: Not honna click,I like minor scales and chords. Hell do it inreverse and minorfy some sickeningly happy songs.

PLEASE can someone with musical talent than I do this with "Call Me Maybe"?

2013-01-21 04:51:48 PM
This is... so wrong, but I don't know if it's "wrong because I'm just musically used to the non-shifted version" or something else. I dig it, though, in a really weird sense (I like seeing what other artists do with songs, so this is kind of the same thing).

D Minor is the saddest key.

FlashHarry: still a couple of minor chords in there, but, yes, that was interesting.

Yeah, I kinda wonder what the rule they used was...
I think they just take the Am scale and raise every C->C#, F-F#, G-G#, which would put it in Amajor, but convert the F major chord in the original to an F#m, and the G chord to a G-half-diminished.... The F#m sounds right, but I'm not sure about the diminished G.

That would also be easiest thing to do in software.

I liked it.

Hence the reason for using different scales....

SilentStrider: CavalierEternal: I really like the first one they did with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters".

That's even odder than the one in TFA.
Again, don't dislike it.

Man, it goes from being whiny and lame to being childish and epic. Maybe could have been playing over the credits for Brave or somesuch.

I thought so...

You can have minor chords in a major scale

Damn, that was cool. I definitely prefer the original, but still appreciate the transposition.

Vacation Bible School: CavalierEternal: I really like the first one they did with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters".

I just wish Metallica would go back to their jazz phase

Hot damn! Always makes me laugh. Also, this video sets a standard in music parody videos that is hard to beat. They actually rerecorded a Metallica song as smooth Jazz, put the original lyrics back in place, and then dropped the whole new song over a live video. If only more people put that kind of effort into parody music videos....

We all know and like the original. Some of us are just more willing to see familiar things from a different perspective.

Major keys contain minor chords. ii and vi are commonly used to lead to the V.

Nothing is really lost by changing it this way. But it's weird. It's decent though.

Showing off digital sound editing software capabilities, I think.

Presenting the same theme in major and minor is a really common thing in classical music. It's one of the easiest variations.

Jesus tap-dancing Christ, what next? Are they going to see what "Everybody Hurts" would sound like with an "up" tempo? It's a good example of how the music sets the tone and feel of the song, regardless of the content of the lyric. My ears are now bleeding.

DreamyAltarBoy: Try playing "twinkle twinkle little star" in a minor key. It becomes cliché ominous.

It was only recently that I had a "well duh" moment and realized that the recurring motif in the Hans Zimmers' Sherlock Holmes score is Westminster Quarters shifted to a minor key, making it action-packed and ominous.

That's the point, really.

Or, rather, the point is that a lot of sad songs are just the simple cheap trick of shifting your music into a minor key and aren't really inherently sad in the lyrics.

//Not that this is particularly a new or obscure point, it's just amusing that it can be made by applying a basic software correction to a song nowadays.
//People used to make the same joke all the time by doing cover versions of happy songs and minor-keying them.
