Damnit Bill, people with money are supposed to be evil.  You're ruining it for all of the other billionaires.

2013-01-21 01:52:16 PM
Well I sure as hell do

/toss a little down here

2013-01-21 01:57:48 PM
That's very sweet of him.

Isn't polio all but gone already? I mean besides a few anti-vax holdouts like ultra-religio-pakistan, isn't it completely gone?

2013-01-21 02:42:17 PM
Although I can find headlines of Gates saying "I have no use for money", none of the related articles actually contain a quote of him saying that.

In any case, eradicating polio seems like a very good use for money.

unlikely: Isn't polio all but gone already? I mean besides a few anti-vax holdouts like ultra-religio-pakistan, isn't it completely gone?

It's making a huge comeback in India and Nigeria, in particular, because of religious anti-vax nonsense and anti-west fear mongerig.

Clerics and community leaders are ACTUALLY telling these people that vaccines are a western plot to sterilize them and give them AIDS.

Thankfully he and Buffett might be making some a bit uncomfortable.

Only rich people say things like "money isn't important to me."

2013-01-21 03:02:07 PM
Maybe he could buy out Microsoft and turn it around. Seems that he'd be good at something like that.

2013-01-21 03:02:55 PM
again?

2013-01-21 03:03:22 PM
Or he could make sure there's clinical trials of the DRACO antiviral. Either way, it's a hell of a tax right off.

2013-01-21 03:03:29 PM
Well what the hell is Ralph Lauren supposed to do now, just pack it in and give up?

2013-01-21 03:03:51 PM
My wallet has polio, give it money.

2013-01-21 03:04:08 PM
No, he's not going to give it all to you. He's not stupid.

2013-01-21 03:04:25 PM
Second time I've seen this without the headline quote.

He said:
Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point.

Not that he has no use for money.

2013-01-21 03:05:19 PM
even with 100% vax rates, the virus is still out there, waiting. no pity, no remorse, it won't stop. ever.

edmo: Only rich people say things like "money isn't important to me."

Great headline misquote by both subby and the D fail. What he said was:

"Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point. Its utility is entirely in building an organization and getting the resources out to the poorest in the world."

Evil prick.

I find it not a little amusing that his father was such an unbearable hard-ass to him when he was younger and dropped out of college.
Bill is doing more good than imaginable. Polio is an insidious disease. We licked it here, it would be wonderful to list it as 'extinct'.

Sadly, Bill isn't exactly the right guy to combat that sort of proud ignorance. "Outing" the source of the funding as an American Billionaire will be a great propaganda tool for those barbarians.

I've always wondering why any cultish leader makes statements like these and how they actually go about justifying such statements? Is it simply to justify/cement their own power of the individuals who take them seriously? Are the clerics themselves really that ignorant? Seems to me that anyone who reads one book will read another and another and really not be all that foolish of a person. Do they not see the evidence of the positive effects vaccines have had on human civilization since their inception? Mostly I'm just curious how ignorance is able to flourish on any level.

Say what you want about his products. The man has done more good with his money than most

Had polio when I was four, Bill. I'll send you my account number.

There was a polio outbreak in Minnesota in 2005 spread among unvaccinated Amish. Link

That's like saying, "Aren't the rats gone already? I mean besides the one male and two females left on the island that we can't get rid of, aren't the rats completely gone?"

It's not gone until it's gone. This is why anti-vax nitwits are ruining things for everybody.

Fo' real, g. I'd be more impressed if this asshat stopped being a do-gooder and fix every that is wrong with Win 8. 'Cause it sucks!!!

2013-01-21 03:09:06 PM
So he's giving his money to strippers?

2013-01-21 03:09:21 PM
Well, polio is bad, but I read somewhere that it would be actually possible to get rid of mosquito completely and forever, if enough money is spent. Why not do that, it will kill several birds with one stone including several fatal diseases.

Let's not forget we used a fake vaccination program to find Bin Laden. Certain people might have very real reasons to avoid vaccinations in that part of the world. And while we may not like those people, they're just as capable of spreading polio as anyone else.

2013-01-21 03:10:14 PM
My uncle had polio.
He got over it.
But it took a hell of a lot of work.

2013-01-21 03:10:18 PM
So he wants to fill the world with retarded children? What a monster!

Why polio? Why not something like Jock Itch?

Money is rather important to me, but that's because I don't have a lot of it. I'd dare I need it to survive

Those who tell don't know and those know won't tell.

India was polio-free in 2012. Pakistan is where the hot spot is in Asia :(

I would rather Bill do something like this instead of him "paying a little bit more" and sending it down the rat hole. I am sure the overhead the Gates Foundation has is very small compared to the Government's.

2013-01-21 03:15:02 PM
The great thing about finishing polio is that we'll have resources to get going on malaria and measles.'

There's some forward thinking for ya.

2013-01-21 03:15:04 PM
I don't like Microsoft. I doubt very much if I would like Mr. Gates if I were to meet him.

But credit where it's due. Eradicating polio is a worthy cause, so kudos to him (and, presumably, Melinda).
