Borscht Belt comedians made that joke in the 40's and 50's.
Shakespeare made that joke at the Globe Theatre.
The well-known stand-up philosopher Comicus made that joke working the main room at The Palace.

Nothing against Mr. Cumberbatch but how the hell does one professionally act with a name like "Benedict Cumberbatch" and not do gay porn? Even if that is his real name were I him I'd have gotten a less gay sounding name like "Jack Harkness" or "George Takei" if I were going to act and not do gay porn.

As it was in other countries until Washing Yourself was invented.

Washing doesn't prevent cancer of the penis and stds including aids.

Circumsision doesn't prevent it either, it merely lowers your risk factor. By a pretty sizable percentage points, but double-digit reductions in extremely small percentages results in fairly small reductions. As in, it isn't enough for it to be much of a factor overall.

That and neither of those reasons is why it is so prevalent in the US, where it has been that way for decades and those are both fairly recent findings.

Anything that's is cheap, simple and makes condom usage more effective should be done. I doubt I'm missing anything not have a foreskin.

Personally, I agree. That I why I started a group to lobby for mandatory double mastectomies in all girls once they reach puberty. That would save even more lives than circumcision.

Of course you are. For the uncircumcised, the idea of an unclad bellend bouncing around in your trousers is painful to the point of horror. Like a more unpleasant version of scrubbing the inside of your mouth with cotton tissues in perpetuity..

That indeed suggests that the nature of the skin is fundamentally changed.

It's like arguing that babies should have their fingernails removed to reduce the chance of them harbouring bacteria under tham.

Because it's a story about how the tightness of Starfleet uniforms mean that you can tell if a gent has a foreskin of not, and that his comment on that only makes sense to those non-Americans because circumcision is generally only practiced by the Jews in 95% of the West?

Of all the threads, this seems like a perfect locale for circumcision discussion.

Or a Star Trek discussion...

Or better, a definitive list of those in Star Trek who are circumcised.

I'll start.

Captain Picard, 100% not circumcised.

Captain Kirk, circumsized.
Spock, circumsized.

Dr Bahir, not circumcised.

It's arguably far less of a thing to remove the breasts, as they only have a purpose during breastfeeding, which in itself is optional. A foreskin has a job every hour of the day, just like an eyelid does.

Also, the death rate from all forms of penile cancer (even the type circumcision wouldn't prevent) is about 200 per year. The death rate for women by breast cancer is about 40,000 per year. Yet nobody is seriously debating routine breast removal. Hell, routine removal of breast tissue in men would save about the same number -- 200 men die of breast cancer per year. Lets do that instead.

The only reason we still circumcise is because of cultural inertia. I think it is an anachronism that will eventually be discarded.

When we were expecting our son, we decided against it, as we couldn't come up with any compelling reason to do so. My family was not happy, and kept referencing outdated and debunked medical evidence. We still didn't, and haven't regretted that decision at all, which I know wouldn't have been the case otherwise. Even the doctor called us "progressive" when we told him no to the circumcision. It's like formula feeding- there's still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation out there, and people often feel pressured because everyone else does it.

I'm British, and I have to say that we view the American circumcision fetish as.,.. odd. Anyone in the UK who was circumcised would be presumed Jewish, No-one would even really consider it as something anyone would do outside religion.

Yeh as a Brit it amazes me that something with so little medical benefit is defended so vehemently yet other things that would actually make a statistical impact on death rates are seen as unacceptable.

Yes, well, the easiest way to prevent abortion is the pill, yet for some reason the pill is suddenly a Very Bad Thing. You'd think the anti-abortion folks would do the math and see that the pill (and other bc) greatly reduces unwanted pregnancies, but no, we now have abstinence-only education.

It's a British word. Like "lorry", "crisps", or "dole".

It's kind of interesting... in Great Britain, what we call a "lunchbox" (carrier designed to carry children's lunches to school) is known as a "scrotum".

"Sebastian, Siobhan! The lorry's here to take you to Tallywacker Academy. I've packed your kippers in your scrotum, don't forget it!"

The Lunchbox is also known as the 'Packet' or 'Package', and many others names...

Linford Christie, the owner of the 'lunchbox' that launched its popular culture usage when comedians and alike remarked upon its display in lycra (search Youtube for why).
