Brick-House: There is a Prequel Comic Book of the Into Darkness movie that is being released. The first 5 pages of which have been posted on-line. Can't tell what religion anyone is because of all the Lens Flare. No really, they put Lens Flare in the comic.

Huh? It's the foreskin that gets removed, not the nuts.

Bungles: BigLuca: Bungles:
It's arguably far less of a thing to remove the breasts, as they only have a purpose during breastfeeding, which in itself is optional. A foreskin has a job every hour of the day, just like an eyelid does.

Also, the death rate from all forms of penile cancer (even the type circumcision wouldn't prevent) is about 200 per year. The death rate for women by breast cancer is about 40,000 per year. Yet nobody is seriously debating routine breast removal. Hell, routine removal of breast tissue in men would save about the same number -- 200 men die of breast cancer per year. Lets do that instead.

The only reason we still circumcise is because of cultural inertia. I think it is an anachronism that will eventually be discarded.

I'm British, and I have to say that we view the American circumcision fetish as.,.. odd. Anyone in the UK who was circumcised would be presumed Jewish, No-one would even really consider it as something anyone would do outside religion.

Yeh as a Brit it amazes me that something with so little medical benefit is defended so vehemently yet other things that would actually make a statistical impact on death rates are seen as unacceptable.

Yes, well, the easiest way to prevent abortion is the pill, yet for some reason the pill is suddenly a Very Bad Thing. You'd think the anti-abortion folks would do the math and see that the pill (and other bc) greatly reduces unwanted pregnancies, but no, we now have abstinence-only education.

When we were expecting our son, we decided against it, as we couldn't come up with any compelling reason to do so. My family was not happy, and kept referencing outdated and debunked medical evidence. We still didn't, and haven't regretted that decision at all, which I know wouldn't have been the case otherwise. Even the doctor called us "progressive" when we told him no to the circumcision. It's like formula feeding- there's still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation out there, and people often feel pressured because everyone else does it.

Nothing against Mr. Cumberbatch but how the hell does one professionally act with a name like "Benedict Cumberbatch" and not do gay porn? Even if that is his real name were I him I'd have gotten a less gay sounding name like "Jack Harkness" or "George Takei" if I were going to act and not do gay porn.

Because it's a story about how the tightness of Starfleet uniforms mean that you can tell if a gent has a foreskin of not, and that his comment on that only makes sense to those non-Americans because circumcision is generally only practiced by the Jews in 95% of the West?

Of all the threads, this seems like a perfect locale for circumcision discussion.

Why does everyone always think this is an american thing? There are plenty of countries that have rates of circumcisions as high, or higher, than america. Most middle eastern counties average about 95%. It's also very popular in Australia, South America, Korea, Africa, Canada as well as many smaller countries. Basically it's not popular in Europe, how that translates into it being an American only thing is beyond me.

I said the West (ie Europe, the US, Canada, Japan, Australia etc, which represents 99% of Fark users)......by "very popular" in Australia, you mean a current rate of 12%, half of which is religious and the majority of the rest because of medical conditions.... which makes it only a tiny fraction more likely than in Europe. Same with Japan. Same with New Zealand.

In the West, it *is* an American thing. Even Canada, your closest cultural ally, it's 14% at current rates, the bulk of which are again either religious or medical.

Non-religious, non-medical circumcisions are very rare in the West, apart from the US. The sole exception is South Korea, which only happened post-1945, from close to 0%.

Many people of the older generations still don't believe in breastfeeding, although the younger generations are breastfeeding more and more. But back in my grandma's day, formula was better for the baby, you got a saddle block for the pain of childbirth, and boys were always circumcised- because the DOCTORS said so (at the time..you know, like how cigarettes were good for you). It's taken decades, but people have come back around to "hey, maybe breastfeeding is a good thing", and it looks like circumcision is going the same way. When I asked my doctor's opinion about it, he recommended it solely on the basis of "most boys in our area are circumcised and you don't want him to look different." But statistics show that circumcision used to be nearly universal in the US, and now the rate is declining.

puckrock2000: Bashir

The rate in Sudan is low for Africa, plus a British mother, would weight the likelihood of him not being circumcised. Male Muslim circumcision is by no means the norm, but mainly locally cultural, which Sudan isn't particularly.

I'd say 65%/35% for him being uncircumcised.

That's not entirely true. Only a large minority of uncircumcised penises have full foreskin retraction (because it's not really meant to, if you think about it from an evolution standpoint. It's for self-lubed movement. Lube is not natural).

Yes, but not for men. Those with vaginas not able to properly self-lubricate are hold overs from our evolutionary past.

Think about poor cats, where the barbed penis rips out the vaginal lining to initiate ovulation.

HotWingAgenda: That joke only makes sense outside the US, where circumcision is the norm no matter what religion you are, due to health practices.

It used to be widespread in hospitals here, but I wouldn't call it a norm - more like a symptom of our broken medical system: doctors getting away with performing unnecessary surgery on babies. It still happens, but not so much. In the last couple decades, a few things have changed - more of the doctors who do it have started taking their ethics seriously, parents became better informed that it was unnecessary, and most significantly, some insurance programs have stopped paying for it.

It was common, but even those of us who grew up back in the 80s eventually found out it wasn't exactly normal. Then again, if you google norm and circumcision, you'll get results - just not what you may not have been expecting.
