liam76:

The down vote doesn't just remove trolls it removes unpopular opinions.

A fair enough point, but with the trolls gone, at least some relevant, interesting discussion happens. I took a stroll over to Politics, and the same threadcrapping trolls are there from years ago preventing any interesting discussion from happening. God forbid something does happen worth reading, it is buried in all the troll/counter-troll bullshiat. On Reddit, the interesting discussion is threaded and easily readable. Yes, the price for that is a bit more groupthink, but frankly, I find it head and shoulders above what has happened here, or, to the point, what hasn't happened here.

mooseyfate: superoogie: Is this really what Fark has been reduced to? Posting a link to a site that stole an image from a front-page Reddit post from a day or so ago?

Call me farking crazy, but isn't the entire point of Fark to post ridiculous and pointless "news" stories so that we can all point and laugh as a group? Who gives a shiat what the source website is, as long as it's utterly un-newsworthy, I'd say it's meeting the farking criteria. If anything, you should be outraged that REAL news flashes end up on Fark's main page. But I forgot, this doesn't have so much to do with Fark so much as it has to do with you proclaiming how you "saw it first" somewhere else.

Since you're being a dick, I'll respond in kind. Are you so farking stupid that you ignored the rest of my comments, with details and examples, of why I think Fark has become the lesser choice?

Well, what I said was relevant, and repeated. Other posted that did not repeat what I said were just jacking it.

Clearly you're the arbiter of when a thread is supposed to be over. Carry on.

I've been coming here since 2001. I remember the old Fark, when it was fun and freewheeling, and before Drew decided he wanted to make the site corporate-safe. Back when epic threads really were epic.

And I, too, was annoyed by people saying the same things I'm saying about Reddit until a year or so ago. But then I actually checked Reddit out. And nearly all the content on Fark really was just re-posted from Reddit a day or so later. And users have a real impact on the community without having to pay $5 a month. And discussions aren't 90% troll bait/troll bash because that stuff gets downvoted. Where there is a specialized discussion area for whatever your interest (though the less said about some, the better). Anyone saying they can't follow Reddit or hate the design are either not actually using the site, stupid, or missing the point, though someone can obviously prefer one over the other.

I've left and I've not been back, and felt I missed little. This story (a content steal of a repost) struck a cord enough for me to log in an post again. Consider this a brief call to an ex after seeing her hit rock bottom in public.

/Thread-jack, I know.

I knew there were paid political shills, but I didn't realize that Reddit hired people to come out and try and sell their shiatty site.

Carth: Because if you have any hobby or interest there are likely subreddits with a few thousand other people get together and talk about that hobby. Anything from /r/campingandhiking, /r/origami, /r/dogtraining to /r/fantasy, /r/running, and /r/homebrewing.

Reddit is really one of those sites if you want something out of it you need to put some effort into finding sections that interest you.

If there are thousands of people interested in a subject on reddit, I'm positive there are thousands of people outside reddit who were interested enough to establish a community with a long history and far better tools for discussion of that thing prior to there being a subreddit for it. What value does having that discussion on reddit add?

superoogie, the fact that you can come here, shiat on the man's site, actively try to persuade members to abandon it, hence costing FARK money, to go to your preferred hangout and make a rival site money, yet still have posting privileges tells me why I prefer FARK. Open source usually implies there's collaboration. There's no way to fix reddit from the inside or it would look & work better.

I prefer a thread filled with highlights for "troll" or "dishonest" then a thread full of circle jerking.

I still go there for headlines, but the politics/news threads I can't generaly tolerate.

It is an aggregate of all your hobbies in one spot. I enjoy logging in and being able to see hundreds of links from the few dozen topics that interest me sorted and ranked by a community of other people who are interested in it. Most forums aren't threaded, like fark, so once a topic is a few days old conversation dies out.

Sure I could go to a few dozen different sites to get the same content or advice but why would I want to do that?

Carth: Sure I could go to a few dozen different sites to get the same content or advice but why would I want to do that?

Because those other sites have vastly better tools for discussion and presumably a far longer history than reddit or its various sub-sites. I'd argue that you're more likely to encounter a subject-matter expert who prefers to hang out on a forum that was created in 2002 instead of a subreddit that's only been around since last May, too.

Threaded or not threaded isn't an issue, but reddit's default presentation is god-awful and I don't really like the way it handles voting on posts, either

The threads don't make it more readable. They make it harder for minority opinions and newer posts to be seen, same as voting. People reply to the top comment (highest voted) regardless of whether their post is related.

I'm convinced reddit's discussion popularity is due to push notifications and votes. The little orange reply envelope makes you happy. It doesn't really matter what's in it.

You tie your "score" to your personal value and freak out if anything happens to it. That's why people are obsessed with credit and vengeful of "stealing links." You posted MY link from r/Movies in r/Film - how DARE you. Meanwhile you're not producing anything. You're earning a higher score, which means fark all, except in your head. Fark can't "steal" reddit's links. Reddit never makes anything as a community and it deserves no credit for anything linked to from its pages. It's the same as the rest of the internet. It's called sharing.

I don't know if the tools are better on other forums but I agree in part. The two or three hobbies I'm most interested in I do follow a bunch of different forums and blogs but I just don't have the time to do that for every topic I like. Reddit allows me to keep track of a bunch of different topics and I know I'll find out the same day if anything happens in those areas. This gives me more time to spend on the things I really like without missing out on things that I just find interesting.

I agree the default presentation is terrible there is too much content and not enough organization. Luckily it is really easy to change.

That's just hilarious. If you really think Reddit needs people to try and "steal away" users, you're deluded. If you don't believe me, just ask yourself how many times the president has been over here. I've posted stuff on Reddit that I know for the fact would have gotten me ban-hammered here. For one, you're publically able to ask about the rules over there. The fact that you think this is some kind of libertarian paradise is just crazy.

I was replying to a post back to me. I did not intend on anything more than my original, but I spoke my mind on the matter, and we can see how open and accepting everyone was of differing viewpoints here. I don't know you from Adam, either, but I get the impression you're a bit of a dick. I've gotten to know a lot of people here, and am still in contact with some. Reddit's design is much better than Fark's, once you get used to it.  Threaded comments alone make it so much better.  Being able to collapse an entire thread is great. Being able to make a subreddit on a whim is also nice.  Here we're stuck with whatever tabs they give us.

Fark's pretty much stuck in 2003...

I saw Tarantino on the Graham Norton show a couple days ago. He said he had originally written the role of Vincent Vega to be played by Michael Madsen, who had played Vic Vega (Mr. Blond) in Reservoir dogs. The characters were supposed to have been cousins or brothers or something to explain the resemblance. Then Madsen turned it down to star in a different movie. John Travolta was awesome, though.
