The powerful tribal chief, Aaron, once told Shifu Miao Zhang that "Our tribe's god is very powerful and helps us defeat others. I once threw my staff on the ground and it turned into venomous snakes. Another time, I shook my staff in anger and made all the water in the wells and creeks turn into blood."

Miao Zhang looked at Aaron and softly said, "I've used my cane to dig up roots to feed some hungry children. Fortunately, chief, our gentle gods mostly leave us alone."

A novice was trying to fix a broken Lisp machine by turning the power off and on.

Knight, seeing what the student was doing, spoke sternly: "You cannot fix a machine by just power-cycling it with no understanding of what is going wrong."

Knight turned the machine off and on.

Fair point. Maybe religious people should take a harder look at their leaders to try and prevent the perversion of their beliefs. I agree completely that an evil person can be evil in any environment that gives them power. We should all be more wary those we give power to, and try to prevent our organizations from becoming havens for those who would use power to harm others.

To be fair, one of the stories of POW abuse I heard was that they fed them natto. Natto is fermented soy beans. It looks like hell, smells like amonia, but it's actually a staple food and has vitamins out the wazoo.

Stuff like this was actually popular at the squad/platoon level for variety after a week of lifting/more standard forms of PT. At first, most people thought it was kind of dumb, but the few people who tried it attested to the level of difficulty and apparent benefit in flexibility, which drew the others like moths to a flame.

And that's the answer to getting Marines to try anything, by the way. Just say it's really hard, but turns you into a total badass.

THIS.
If you actually read Japanese history, not the romanticisation of it, you find that instead of being hyper-honorable death-before-surrender types the comics were full of, they old Bushi class could and would change sides on a moment's notice, depending on who they felt stood a better chance of winning the war. What was blindly worshipped was not honour but military ability and strength. The poor were "protected" in the same way that small businesses in mob-heavy territories were "protected".

Why expect religious people to be so much better at this than anyone else? Just look at warrantless wiretapping threads here on Fark in 2006 versus the same threads in 2009 to see just how difficult a job this is.

Facing a record suicide rate and thousands of veterans seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress, the military has been searching for ways to reduce strains on service members burdened with more than a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Soooooo, everybody yoga?

This is good.

Do you think this kind of therapy might work for people who had things happen to them in childhood, and now still experience PTSD, anxiety, etc. etc. in their early 30's? Like...a not common therapy of farking drugs, and western psychotherapy?

I'm very serious and it's not about me but someone I care very much about.

Haliburton Cummings: awww..they can break out the yoga mats after a hard day of bLLLAAAAGGHHhhhffrrgghhhh *involuntarily shiats pants*

Oh dear, I really should have warned you about that.

Someone on the Joint Chiefs of Staff just figured out how to read minds.

I would say it's worth a shot. Mindfulness helps you break away from your preconceptions and conditioning, to sort of see the world as it is in that absence of those biases. Takes time and it's very much a lifestyle choice; but I would say a positive one, and from the anecdotal cases in friends of mine, very helpful in dealing with anxiety.

If it's got the potential to help combat-shocked Marines, it's certainly got the potential to help psychologically injured civilians.

I wish you and yours well :)

mrexcess: You'd still have the worst medieval Popes without religion, only they'd seek their power from some other organization and be called Kings or El Presidentes instead. What you would probably not have are the Gandhis, MLKs, and Tenzin Gyatsos.

Blaming religion for what cynical, exploitative, dishonest people do with it is broken thinking.

Religion was created to allow people to have control over others. Without it, you would still have good and bad people.

Oh, horseshiat. The problem with most Marines is that they're encouraged not to think at all. They're physically fit, but mental messes. Of course, that's my experience from actually being in the Marine Corps. A fit body and a flabby mind are promoted.

studs up: Heron: I've got some great ideas about how to reduce suicide rates; quit doping your soldiers with speed, putting them back on the line before their mandatory rest period is up, and forcing them into multiple back-to-back tours contrary to established regulation. We made those rules during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam for a god-damn reason you asses. Something else that might help them not kill themselves? Quit using basic to brain-wash people into thinking their girlfriends are whores, their family doesn't love them, and that the only thing in the world they can rely on is the Same farking Corps which forgets about them the minute their demobilize. Maybe try that you stupid, heartless sons of biatches.

Nobody loved me the way the Corps loved me.

GilRuiz1: pciszek: GilRuiz1: pciszek: GilRuiz1: Came in expecting FARK's resident antitheists doing the old "OMG SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE," but they seem strangely silent.

I already made my case the first time we had this thread, a few days ago. I could copy and paste those arguments if you like.

I missed that thread. Link, please?

Thanks.

Wow, I was expecting more anti-religion comments but it seemed you were the only one who made the argument, and you got raked over the coals by others. Most everyone else seemed to be of the LULZ-XTIANS-SUCK variety. Not what I was expecting from my reliably religion-hating FARK.

That kind of religious ignorance against christiand is far too common on Fark.

I have heard high miraculous results can be achieved by coupling a dose of MDMA. (Ecstasy) with guided therapy will under the influence of the drug.  Apparently, revisiting  the memory while under the happy drug decouples  the emotional trauma from the memory and cures the PTSD
