Bah.  At my school the minimum price for a permit is $150 a year, and there's basically zero chance of "parking and walking" from elsewhere, because you won't have a car to come back to (and all the academic buildings are central campus, so you'll be walking for a farking long time).
Parking next to my department is $250 IF they draw your name from the lottery.

sad that buildings full of educated minds lack imaginations. they could give incentive for those who drive micro cars, scooters, motorcycles or bikes. they could also have a portion of classes at off hours, earlier in the morning or later in the evening. and if buildings are incredibly far apart from each other that indicates large expanses of unused land. mow over some of that sod and build a few parking lots.

Possible solution: go to a real school instead of a no-name shiathole like Worcester State.

Im sure it has little or nothing to do with parking issues and more to do with putting money in their pockets. Not the teachers of course, the upper admins obviously.

I have had thousands of dollars in parking tickets at Michigan State University. Also, if your drunk ass wants to sleep in a house in whatever neighborhood you are in within 5 miles of the school, prepare for a hefty "no parking between 2am and 6am" ticket.

I can see walking taxes sauntering this way.

Maybe they'll make better parking accommodations with that money. And my parking tickets :) It's a huge school and you are extremely lucky to find a spot within a mile or two. Whatever, tax me bro. I'm numb from textbook sticker shock.

2013-01-20 02:44:59 PM
At the school I go to, they automatically charge you for a parking pass. A lot of students never go pick it up because they don't even know they can. They also charge me $40 a semester for printing in the computer lab at 4c per page, but if you don't use all 1000 sheets, they keep the money. If you go over, they charge another $40 for THAT semester then keep all you don't use. Yay statewide budget shortfalls.

So they changed the fees around so that people who take the shuttle still pay the fee to subsidize everyone else's parking, then try and make up for it by giving them coffee. And they wonder why the shuttle's so unpopular.

A mandatory fee to walk on public property?

If those ambulance-chasing lawyers with daytime TV commercials want to offset their negative karma, this is a good place to start.

FTFA: Students are paying an average of $8,283 in tuition and fees, nearly double the cost a decade ago.

Boo farking hoo. I work at as a professional staff and adjunct faculty at another New England state University (that shall remain nameless), and I can tell you this is an absolute bargain. In-state tuition and fees for us are about $10K, not including housing.

I get to tell my college parking stories. First time, I parked in visitor parking to take care of some quick administrative task and I got a ticket. My sin: I had my student parking permit displayed while parked in a visitor spot. If I'd stashed it in the glove compartment, I wouldn't have been ticketed.

The second time, I parked in front of the permit office in a space clearly marked for people who were there to buy permits. When I came out with my staff permit, there was a ticket on my window. My boss had to write a letter requesting that it be dismissed. My sin: None at all. That's where I was supposed to park while obtaining my permit. I wasn't displaying a permit of any kind, expired or current.

I take it that the school doesn't have to follow zoning ordinances or building standards? What locality would allow the building of a dormitory or any other building that did not have something in the building plan to accommodate the amount of people in the proposed building? Apparently the tards at this school built a dorm where a parking lot was and neither replaced those spots or made any additional? The land of the Kennedy family. Clearly the brightest people on the planet.

They had/have a bad parking problem at IU Northwest in Gary. They put up a big new building on campus, eliminating a large section of the main parking lot at the same time enrollment was going up. They didn't have any stupid pedestrian fees, though.

The sad thing is that not everyone has parents that can afford to shell out for college. Those who don't have to mortgage their future and emerge from college looking for a new job while already in significant debt.

It's funny how they can find $45 million to build a sports complex but they can't find the money to build a farking parking garage? For that matter, why the hell does a commuter college like WSU need a $45 million sports complex to begin with?

That football field would be useful for parking spaces. Foley Field stadium is five minutes down the street.

Among the top of my list of peeves is people who lie by using a word in a way that it doesn't mean. Fee implies that it's not part of cost- that I'm either taking or not taking some action and that's why I have a fee. To the best of my ability, if someone gives me a charge I literally can't get out of and calls it a fee, they will not get my business.
Fee means something outside of what you think it means- stop lying to me.

Hey subby:

It's a fee, not a tax. And I'm willing to bet you don't even know, let alone care why:

And the pedestrian fee is needed to help maintain walkways in an era of decreased state funding for public colleges and universities, they say.

The lots are empty at 8 AM. And students gripe that there is nowhere to park. Because their first class is at noon, I guess.

Oh how your world will change, my snowflakes. The things you will discover! For example, many employers provide free parking. Few let you show up at noon. None cares about how you get to work.

A thousand years ago my university decided to change the student IDs. I had lost my wallet over the summer so before they would issue me a new ID the charged me $50 to replace the old ID and then they gave me the new ID which they would have given me for free if I could have just shown them my old ID. This was part of a pattern of money grubbing and screwing students.

Every year they call and ask for money but as they went to extremes to make me feel like was just a number I feel no need to give. I wonder how much the money grubbing cost them

I've worked at a lot of large universities and I have NEVER seen parking built alongside additional workspace. The parking has to get really really really out of hand before they will separately build any more. And the zoning people do nothing but suck the administration's cock on it. While small schools may be different, large universities never have to play by the same rules other local industries are supposed to.

People need to get creative... When I was in college I worked for the Biology Department, and spent the last couple of years of my undergrad and my entire grad-school time doing field research half the time. One of the sites was government property and required us to have marked vehicles for whatever reason... I liked to drive my own truck because the paid mileage helped a lot and the university trucks were junk.

So... I jumped on a printer and made decals that said "ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH" down the side. All the university vehicles were marked with black lettering on the back like "C-17", V-29"... stuff like that. So I knocked up a "C-32", threw that on the back of my truck and called it good.

I parked wherever in the hell I wanted to after that because campus police thought it was a university vehicle. Got away with it for 4 years, too.

Trolling detected, but I'll bite despite that.

It would make sense to go to college if the tab is being picked up by someone else, OR if you plan to major in something that has real economic value ( what that "something" is has been debated ad infinitum on FARK)
