TomD9938: hbk72777: If the mother covered up the white and red with marker, that means she couldn't afford to buy another pair.

I can go to The Goodwill Store and find a used pair of black shoes in my kids size for five bucks or less.

They had the money to buy the wrong colored shoes did they not?

Therefore hauling a five year old out school in the back of a squad car is perfectly reasonable.

Also... Mississippi has some of the poorest people in the country. Five bucks can mean a whole hell of a lot when you're poorer than dirt.

No Time To Explain: America, i thought Florida was you're problem, turns out I was wrong

/let Mississippi secede?

Florida is crazy in an amusing way. Mississippi is just backwards in a very depressing way.

stiletto_the_wise: The article actually nails it nicely, for a change. It's not about shoes or even the dress code. It's about the school-to-prison pipeline and it doesn't just happen in Mississippi, so you people in the other 49 states can hold your jokes about the ass of the south.

"Zero-tolerance policies were originally designed to protect students from individuals who pose a threat on school grounds. Instead, they are being used to send children home for trivial things that should be solved in the principal's office."

You can thank "Zero Tolerance" for enabling the school-to-prison pipeline.

Yeah, because this is the only reason we all think you're the ass of the South.

So you approve of using the cops to take a kindergartener home because of his shoe color?

mediablitz: Aces and Eights: Sorry about that. I hate to hear about someone being mistreated, especially when the South is supposed to be known for hospitality. Some of us DO try though. You might be able to find a few decent folks down here. Some of us have college degrees and live in houses with no wheels and everything.

lol. I am well aware. It just strikes me how pervasive the racist attitudes still are in the south. It isn't just isolated incidents.

I know what you mean. I just hate it when people generalize about groups of people, and perpetuate stereotypes, don't you?

Forget turning the Middle East into a glass parking lot. Start with Mississippi. Or, at least round up all the school administrators, put them in one spot, then nuke the spot. From orbit.

Jesus.

First, the shoes were black, the markers covered red and white symbols on the black shoes. The kid is five and needs no lesson in respect from school and classmates, as there was a good faith effort to comply with the dress code, and the school should not be undermining his respect for his parents or cause him to question theirs regard for himself or his education.

Second, the principal is black. He got bent out of shape because the mother "disrespected" him...she had resisted his initial counsel about the shoes by saying thatntheynwere black and conformed to the dress code. She acceded to his demands and blotted out the symbols with the marker. They were perfectly good black shoes and the objection to them was specious, but she marked over the symbols anyway. The principal was enraged to see she had not completely replaced the shoes with the dressier shoes he preferred. His big deal, was he was "sassed" by a woman, being very insecure about such matters.

TomD9938: The My Little Pony Killer: TomD9938: And nearly all of them went to the trouble to find black shoes for their kids.

Nearly all of the people in Mississippi go to the same school as the kid from TFA? You really are a raging moran.

Yes. Yes they do.

vpb: Shoes are free in Mississippi. The only reason people there don't have nice shoes is because they don't want to go to the trouble.

Even more reason to abide by the schools regulations.  Rules are rules, people.

You had a really good troll going, then ruined it with this half-hearted follow up.

I am disappointed.

It's rather messed up that those schools use the police as a means to discipline kids... however, just as messed up is the faulty logic of saying "for every one white student who is given an out-of-school suspension, three black students are suspended, even though black students comprise just half of the student population."  - because as we all know, black students come from the exact same socioeconomic backgrounds as all white students. Likewise, there are no Hispanic or Asian students, apparently, so the other half MUST be all white students.

Let's also ignore the mix in rural vs. urban schools, because the 50/50 mix must be equal across all school districts, and those districts must all be equally racist.

People that dwell on this sort of inane false logic will continue to ignore the real causes of these problems, and fail to ever come up with practical solutions.

Undoubtedly, there is a racist component to the state's poor academic performance, but if you can't be bothered to construct valid logical arguments because they don't fit your hyperbolized outlook of the world, don't expect mainstream America to care.

I'm sure plenty of white kids fall afoul of school rules in particular school districts. The racial issue here isn't specifically with the schools, it's with the socioeconomic conditions that tend to be drawn along racial lines due to deep cultural issues. I honestly have no idea how to solve the problem, but if you can't recognize it, it can't ever be solved. Racists can't be blamed for all the evils of the world... and certainly shouldn't be used as a scapegoat when deeper problems need to be addressed.

Shorter version: if it's raining, I can't just go out and get wet and blame the clouds, but if I'm a stubborn jerk, the first problem anybody else has in stopping me from getting wet is to convince me to put on a raincoat.

Common sense and personal responsibility have given way to a culture of entitlement.

I guess there is no serious crime problem in Mississippi.

" Students on a school bus were throwing peanuts at one another. Because one of the peanuts hit the female bus driver, five black male high school students were arrested on felony assault charges."

If you are driving a bus and students are throwing peanuts and won't stop, and you get hit I have no problem with the bus driver pulling over and calling the cops.

If you are a cop called to a stopped bus that is there because a driver was hit by something students threw, that charge is conceivable.

The fact that it was a peanut doesn't nescesarily mean it was unwarranted.

But, taken as a whole, it is ridiculous. Five students charged for the driver getting hit with a peanut? All of them black? Come now.

You mean the 49 states which higher student test scores?

Or do you mean the 49 states with a higher median income?
