2013-01-20 11:17:33 AM
I guess there is no serious crime problem in Mississippi.

Yes, folks, Mississippi is a state on the move! Mississippi is charging forward into the future! Look out!

If the mother covered up the white and red with marker, that means she couldn't afford to buy another pair. It's not like covering it up with removable tape as a "fark you" to the school, marker doesn't come off, it's permanent. This wold be the dumbest story I've heard all week if it weren't for the 5 year old "bubble gun bandit"

Mississippi eh? Were the shoes the wrong color, or was the boy the wrong color? Tell the truth now, good ol' boy.

Hey, has anyone heard that Mississippi has ridiculous disciplinary actions for elementary school kids yet?

2013-01-20 11:26:41 AM
This would NEVER happen if we allowed the teachers to be armed.

Sock Ruh Tease: Mississippi eh? Were the shoes the wrong color, or was the boy the wrong color? Tell the truth now, good ol' boy.

Considering its MS, I think we all know the answer to that question.

no doubt these harsh conditions came to exist overnight. parents were clueless. things were all going along really well before it came to this.

Well this explains Mississippi being ranked 49th of High School graduates... all their kids are doing time for wearing the wrong color shoe.

The article actually nails it nicely, for a change. It's not about shoes or even the dress code. It's about the school-to-prison pipeline and it doesn't just happen in Mississippi, so you people in the other 49 states can hold your jokes about the ass of the south.

"Zero-tolerance policies were originally designed to protect students from individuals who pose a threat on school grounds. Instead, they are being used to send children home for trivial things that should be solved in the principal's office."

You can thank "Zero Tolerance" for enabling the school-to-prison pipeline.

I can go to The Goodwill Store and find a used pair of black shoes in my kids size for five bucks or less.

They had the money to buy the wrong colored shoes did they not?

Their Goodwill Store might not be in an area that they can reach, or if they can reach it, might have not have had his size in the black so mom had to improvise.

You mean the 49 states which higher student test scores?

Or do you mean the 49 states with a higher median income?

Therefore hauling a five year old out school in the back of a squad car is perfectly reasonable.

Also... Mississippi has some of the poorest people in the country. Five bucks can mean a whole hell of a lot when you're poorer than dirt.

If Mississippi ever starts a petition to secede from the country, I'll certainly be signing.

Florida is crazy in an amusing way. Mississippi is just backwards in a very depressing way.

Shoes are free in Mississippi.  The only reason people there don't have nice shoes is because they don't want to go to the trouble.

This article makes me think that the teacher, principal, and cop involved are all mentally deficient, thus incapable of applying policy to real world situations.
That can't be right! They're authority figures!

2013-01-20 12:03:36 PM
FTFA: "for every one white student who is given an out-of-school suspension, three black students are suspended, even though black students comprise just half of the student population."

This leads one to jump to a racist conclusion, ergo white students commit suspendable violations in proportions equal to their percentage of the student population, but are not punished for it.

Zero tolerance means zero tolerance. If you let one kid wear flashy red and white kicks, then every kid is going to want to wear flashy kicks. Soon they would be robbing each other and bullying each other over whose shoes were superior. It would be a powder keg just waiting to go off into another Newtown. Lock him up I say. For the children.

Even more reason to abide by the schools regulations.  Rules are rules, people.
